Look up the Kursk Salient , the biggest tank battle in history. Germany had 3 armies in the East, the north, central and the south.
It was a battle the Wehrmacht had to win. The Red Army dug in and said: come and get us. Eventually Germany attacked. Two armies, the central and the north (may have been the south) were wiped out. The Red Army never looked back.
