Q&A with Sheeraz Haji, new Cleantech to Market (C2M) co-director

A passion to protect the environment began as a child for Sheeraz Haji, the new co-director of the Cleantech to Market (C2M) Program at Berkeley Haas.
“My dad was working in Africa for the World Bank, and we got to see how water pollution impacts peoples’ lives,” said Haji, who directs C2M with Brian Steel. “I ended up going back to Africa in college, and the environment just emerged as something that I became interested in.”
We talked to Haji, who began his career as an environmental engineer, about his varied career and his plans for C2M, a program that matches graduate student teams with entrepreneurs seeking to commercialize their climate tech solutions.
Tell us a bit about yourself. Where did you grow up?
All over the world, actually. My dad worked for the World Bank, so we lived in Washington DC, then in Algeria and then Kenya when I was between eight and 12. Africa was amazing; Nairobi was a peaceful, amazing city surrounded by stunning parks. My dad was born and raised in East Africa so it felt like discovering our roots. One of my big memories was kicking and screaming when my parents told my brother and I we had to return to DC, where I went to high school. We didn’t want to go.
How did living in Africa as a kid impact your world view?
Africa played a big role in shaping my world view. My dad’s work gave me exposure to development and sustainability projects. It hit me as a young person. I was like, ‘Oh, this is something to hold onto.’ It was a pretty strong focus coming out of college. Later I got interested in a lot of other things, including business and software.
You’ve had an interesting career. What are some of the highlights?
There are different parts of my background that fit so well with this job. I studied environmental engineering in college, and started my career as an environmental engineer, working on water and air pollution issues. I’ve had some twists and turns in my career, working at McKinsey in strategy and at startups, running software startup GetActive, which helped nonprofits raise money online. But certainly the environment and energy have been big themes. Recently, I ran a company called Cleantech Group which helps corporations and investors across the globe invest in sustainable innovation. I now focus on climate tech investing and corporate consulting through my own firm, zipdragon ventures.

President Bush Blocks UNFPA Funding for 4th Time Over Forced Abortions
National | Steven Ertelt | Oct 5, 2004 | 9:00AM | WASHINGTON, DC
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — For the fourth consecutive year in a row, President Bush has blocked millions of taxpayer dollars from going to the United Nations Population Fund, because of the agency’s support for China’s population control program that involves forced abortions and sterilizations.
The Bush administration announced Friday that it will divert the $34 million allocated to the U.N. group to a USAID program that provides health care for poor women and children in other countries and for a program that combats the sexual trafficking of women.
Despite the move, Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) is attempting to restore UNFPA funding by adding a provision to a foreign aid bill that would reauthorize the funds.
President Bush has already indicated he will veto any bill that redirects money to UNFPA.
> Convio, Inc. to Acquire GetActive Software, Inc.
>Combination Creates Industry Leader in Internet Solutions for Nonprofits
Convio was a software company based in Austin, Texas in the USA, with offices in Washington, DC and Emeryville, CA. Convio provided internet marketing and business management applications tailored specifically for non-profit organizations, and virtually all of its customers were charities, educational establishments, and political advocacy groups. Convio was acquired by Blackbaud in May 2012 for $325 million.
Early history
Convio was founded in November 1999 by Vinay Bhagat and Dave Crooke, using venture capital funding led by Austin Ventures.[1] The inspiration for the company was the inefficient pen and paper administration of telethons then used by PBS and NPR stations to raise funds from the public.[2] In contrast to many of its then competitors, who focused merely on facilitating donations via credit card transactions on the internet, the vision for Convio was to empower the non-profit sector to make use of the internet by building a commoditized suite of software tools to allow charities and other non-profit organizations to cultivate relationships with their supporters and other constituents via the Internet, and with the goal that these tools could be used directly by the organizations' communications professionals, with the simplicity of desktop word processing software, rather than only being usable by webmasters and IT administrators. The original "placeholder" name of Convio was ShowSupport.com, to evoke the idea of people showing support for causes they believe in.
The name "Convio" (pronounced con-VEE-oh) is false Latin for "with vision" and was chosen to be abstract, short, memorable, and because the internet domain name convio.com was not previously registered. The company logo is intended to represent both a human eye for the concept of vision, and an enthusiastic caryatid with upraised arms for the concept of people giving their support.
In January 2007, Convio acquired GetActive Software,[3] then the second largest[citation needed] eCRM provider for non-profit organizations in the USA. GetActive Software was founded by Bill Pease, Sheeraz Haji, Tom Krackeler, Ken Leiserson and other former staff members at the Environmental Defense Fund who had been doing work within that organization to enable internet activism via the then nascent World Wide Web. They realized that many non-profit organizations could benefit from the same technology, and set up a spin-off commercial software company to further develop and distribute it, with Environmental Defense as a shareholder. The original "placeholder" name of GetActive was Locus Pocus, a pun on the concept of using address mapping technology to connect a visitor to a web site with the political representatives for their district
From 2005-2007, Convio was the target of a boycott campaign [7][8] led by well known left political bloggers John Aravosis and Markos Moulitsas on their respective blogs Americablog and Daily Kos because of the company's stance in serving clients with views from across the political spectrum.[9]
At least one of the blogs may have softened its stance, with the Daily Kos blog linking to political advocacy campaigns powered by Convio's software.[10]
Acquisition
On January 17, 2012, Convio announced that it had entered into an agreement to be acquired by Blackbaud, Inc. (NASDAQ: BLKB) [11] at a price of $16.00 per share, a 49% premium over its market price.
On May 7, 2012, the acquisition was completed, and Convio became fully owned by Blackbaud.

Blackbaud(NASDAQ:BLKB) is a cloud computing provider that serves the social good community—nonprofits, foundations, corporations, education institutions, healthcare organizations, religious organizations, and individual change agents. Its products focus on fundraising, website management, CRM, analytics, financial management, ticketing, and education administration.[1][2][3][4][5]
Blackbaud's flagship product is a fundraising SQL database software, Raiser's Edge.[1] Revenue from the sale of Raiser's Edge and related services accounted for thirty percent of Blackbaud's total revenue in 2012.[1] Other products and services include Blackbaud Enterprise CRM, Altru, Financial Edge, Education Edge, Blackbaud NetCommunity, eTapestry, Luminate Online, Luminate CRM, Friends Asking Friends.[1] In addition, Blackbaud offers consultancy services to nonprofit organizations.[1]
Blackbaud was founded in 1981 by Anthony Bakker.[1][6] The company is headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina.[7] It has regional offices in Austin, Texas; Plano, Texas; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Bedford, New Hampshire.[7] Internationally, Blackbaud has offices in London, England; Sydney, Australia; and Glasgow, Scotland.[7]
Michael Gianoni is Blackbaud's CEO.[8]
Blackbaud acquired Campagne Associates in 2006.[13][14] The company added both Target Software and Target Analysis Group in 2007.[15] Target Software developed large-scale database management solutions while the Target Analysis Group focused primarily on data mining for nonprofits.[15] Later that year, Blackbaud also acquired eTapestry, an online donor management tool.[16]
Blackbaud acquired Kintera in 2008.[17] In 2012, the company acquired Convio.[5][14]
In early 2013, Blackbaud announced that CEO Marc Chardon would leave the company by the end of that year.[18] Anthony Boor became Blackbaud's interim CEO in August 2013.[19][20] Boor joined Blackbaud as the company's chief financial officer in 2011.[20] He was credited with leading Blackbaud's acquisition of Convio.[20]
Michael Gianoni was named the new president and CEO for Blackbaud in November 2013.[8]
Blackbaud acquired MicroEdge in 2014 for $160 million.[21] MicroEdge was a software provider to foundations, with about 2,000 customers.
In October 2017, Blackbaud completed a £95m, about $127.4 million, purchase of JustGiving.[22][23][24]
In April 2018, Blackbaud acquired Reeher, a St. Paul, Minnesota-based predictive modeling platform for colleges and universities, for $40 million.[25]
In January 2019, Blackbaud acquired YourCause, a software as a service (SaaS) provider focused on increasing corporate giving and volunteering for nonprofits and causes.[26][27][28]
Cyber attack
In May 2020, Blackbaud fell victim to a cyber attack. Customer data was stolen and Blackbaud paid the criminals a ransom in exchange for "credible confirmation" that the stolen data was deleted.[29] Customers who were affected include at least twenty universities and charities based in the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands and Canada.[30][31][32] Blackbaud externally disclosed the incident in July 2020,[33] weeks after the company learned about the attack. Blackbaud received criticism for paying the hackers' ransom and its delay in disclosing the attack, as large data breaches must be reported to data authorities within 72 hours of learning about an incident under European General Data Protection Regulations.[34] In a September 29, 2020 Form 8-K filing, Blackbaud CFO Tony Boor admitted, contrary to earlier claims, that customer"bank account information, social security numbers, usernames and/or passwords" were compromised.[35]
