Israel/OPT: Increase in unlawful killings and other crimes highlights urgent need to end Israel’s apartheid against Palestinians

Israeli authorities must end unlawful killings, willful injury, arbitrary arrests, torture and other ill-treatment, persecution and collective punishment against Palestinians, including many children, Amnesty International said in a public statement published today.

In the latest incident, Palestinian journalist Shirin Abu Akleh was shot in the head on 11 May while covering an Israeli military raid in the city of Jenin, in the northern occupied West Bank. Palestinians have been killed or injured as a result of the Israeli forces’ use of excessive force when policing protests or carrying out search and arrest raids. Some Palestinians appear to have been killed in acts that amount to extrajudicial executions, which constitute a crime under international law.

“The killing of veteran journalist Shirin Abu Akleh is a bloody reminder of the deadly system in which Israel locks Palestinians. Israel is killing Palestinians left and right with impunity. How many more need to be killed before the international community acts to hold Israel accountable for the continuing crimes against humanity?” said Saleh Higazi, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

The violence has been escalating since Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett took office on 21 June 2021, with the months of March and April seeing the highest number of Palestinians and Israelis killed outside of armed hostilities in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) in any two months since 2008. Between 21 June 2021 and up until 11 May 2022, Israeli forces killed at least 79 Palestinians, including 14 children in the OPT according to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and Amnesty International’s records. In March, Israeli forces killed 12 Palestinians, including three children. Another Palestinian was killed by an Israeli settler. During the month of April 2022, Israeli forces killed at least 22 Palestinians, including three children, according to Amnesty International’s records. Separate attacks by armed Palestinian individuals killed 18 people in cities across Israel since 22 March.

The alarming escalation in serious violations comes at a time when top Israeli officials have threatened further violence against Palestinians. Since the current escalation of violence, Israeli government officials, including Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, have made repeated statements that incite violence and encourage the use of unlawful force in addition to giving orders to shoot Palestinians who pose no imminent threat. Other politicians have also openly incited violence, highlighting the extent of Israel’s institutionalized discrimination against Palestinians. While Palestinian authorities in the West Bank have condemned all Palestinian attacks on Israeli civilians, spokespeople for some Palestinian armed groups have encouraged such attacks.

“States around the world have a moral and legal responsibility to take immediate action to put an end to the continuing crimes perpetrated by Israel against Palestinians to maintain the calamity of apartheid. The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court should set the course for justice, truth and reparation to end the impunity that encourages these ongoing crimes,” said Saleh Higazi.

Amnesty International has spoken to nine witnesses, three lawyers representing Palestinian detainees, in addition to examining video and photographic evidence, making field observations, and collating information from human rights organizations, to analyze patterns of unlawful killings, arbitrary detention, torture and other ill-treatment, and collective punishment of Palestinian communities. Amnesty International also corroborated information on fatal attacks against civilians in Israel by armed Palestinian individuals.

In response to Disney’s commitment to increasing the amount of LGBTQ content in their children’s progamming following the fallout with the state of Florida over its newly-passed Parental Rights in Education law, a number of U.S. Republican senators are calling for a major change in the way said content is rated.

On May 4th, GOP Senators Roger Marshall (Kansas), Mike Lee (Utah), Mike Braun (Indiana), Steve Daines (Montana), and Kevin Cramer (North Dakota), sent a letter to Charles Rivkin, the Chairman of the TV Guidelines Ratings Boards and whose organization is responsible for designating TV programs with content ratings such as TV-Y, TV-14, and TV-MA.

In the letter, the Senators urged the organization to update their content warnings in light of their belief that LGBTQ content in children’s shows are inappropriate for a TV-Y7 rating – the most common rating for children’s programming.

YouTube censors the Heritage Foundation for uploading Trump’s remarks

The Heritage Foundation announced Monday that YouTube had removed its video of President Donald Trump’s recent speech at the Heritage Foundation’s 2022 leadership conference in Amelia Island, Florida.

The organization said YouTube sent them a notice informing them that Trump’s remarks at the leadership conference “violated” their policies “pertaining to elections misinformation.”

YouTube explained, “Accordingly, the video has been removed and a strike has been applied to the channel. As a result, uploads are suspended for one week.”

The 45th president delivered a powerful speech at the Heritage Foundation last month, laying out policy guidelines for an America First agenda, highlighting the successes of his administration, and pointing out the dangers of the left’s platform. In his speech, he also warned about Big Tech censorship. “The lifeblood of a free society is free speech,” said Trump.

According to the Heritage Foundation, they posted his 82-minute speech on their official YouTube page after it aired on April 21. The video had reached over 531,000 views before the Google-owned platform removed it.

Following YouTube’s censorship, Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts issued a statement. “We live in a country built on the principles of free speech and expression, but these Big Tech giants have their sights set on trampling and ultimately destroying those fundamental principles in pursuit of their political ideology,” he said.

UN receiving ‘credible’ information about Ukrainian troops torturing Russian prisoners, official says

Matilda Bogner, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, said there is “credible” information regarding the mistreatment of Russian prisoners by Ukrainian troops during the war.

“We have received credible information of torture, ill-treatment and incommunicado detention by Ukrainian Armed Forces of prisoners of war belonging to the Russian armed forces and affiliated armed groups,” Bogner said on Tuesday.

The “inhumane treatment” is occurring among captured Ukrainian and Russian soldiers as they are “being coerced to make statements, apologies and confessions, and other forms of humiliation.”

“This violates fundamental rules of international humanitarian law. Ukraine and Russia must promptly and effectively investigate all allegations of torture and ill-treatment of prisoners of war,” Bogner said. “They must also effectively control and instruct their forces to stop any further violations from occurring.”

Ukraine and Russia have conducted multiple prisoner swaps throughout the war, with dozens of Ukrainians and Russians returned to their forces as a result.

The comments came at a press conference that was focused on the “plight of civilians in Ukraine.”

The presser accused Russia of multiple war crimes, including targeting civilians, raping women and forcing civilians to leave Ukraine and go to Russia.

Bogner says the U.N. has found at least 204 cases in which Ukrainians, overwhelmingly men, have been taken by Russian forces to Belarus before arriving at Russia for pre-detention trials.

“The best way to end the violations that we have been documenting will be to end the hostilities. However, while they are ongoing and for as long as they last, parties must in the conduct of operations take constant care to spare the civilian population, civilians and civilian objects and commit to protecting every civilian woman, man and child and those hors de combat that fall under their control,” Bogner said.

Israel said to strike Syrian Golan in missile attack; damage reported

A site in southern Syria was damaged in an Israeli missile attack in the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday, Syrian state media reported.

The attack targeted an area near the town of Hader, north of Quneitra in the Syrian Golan Heights, just across the border from Israel, according to the state-run SANA news agency.

There were no reports of injuries, but material damage was caused, SANA reported.

There was no immediate word on what sites were hit.

A Twitter account tracking Israeli military activity in Syria claimed four missiles were launched from a warplane, causing damage to the area.

Dem Party Leaders, Pfizer, Moderna Involved in US Biological Activities in Ukraine: Russian MoD

The Russian military began reporting on the extent of US military biological activities in Ukraine in March, citing seized documents and other materials on the study of a range of potentially deadly bioweapon agents, including diseases which can be spread naturally using local geography, flora and fauna, and target certain ethnic groups.

Senior Democratic Party politicians are the chief "ideologists" of America's illegal operations in biolabs operating throughout Ukraine, and have involved major multinational biotech companies in their activities, Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia's Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defence Troops, has indicated.

Speaking at a briefing in Moscow on Wednesday and citing an MoD analysis of documentary evidence, the RCB Troops chief said the profits US politicians earn for the private biotech sector helps to pay for their re-election via campaign donations.

According to Kirillov, the US executive branch has also worked to create a "legislative framework to finance military biological research directly from the federal budget", and with funds of non-government organisations underwritten by the state and controlled by the leadership of the Democratic Party, including charitable foundations affiliated with the Clinton family, the Rockerfellers, George Soros, and Hunter Biden.

Major global pharmaceutical companies have become involved in these shady "public-private" partnership schemes, including Pfizer, Moderna, Merck, and Pentagon-affiliated biotech firm Gilead, Kirillov said.

"US specialists are working [in Ukraine] on the testing of new medicines, bypassing international safety standards. As a result, Western companies seriously reduce the costs of research programmes and gain significant competitive advantages", the officer said.

State Structures' Involvement

Ukrainian state structures are also involved in the US-funded and organised military biological activities in their country, Kirillov said, with Kiev's main job being "to conceal illegal activities, conduct field and clinical trials and provide the necessary biomaterial".

In 2020, Kirillov said, an attempt was made to infect the residents of the settlement of Stepovoye in the Lugansk People's Republic with a multi-drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis using counterfeit banknotes contaminated with the disease's causative agent and spread among local youth.

Additionally, the RCB Troops chief said that his agency has received information detailing the Pentagon's experiments on Ukrainian nationals at Psychiatric Hospital No. 1 in the village of Strelechie, Kharkov region, with the research targeting male patients aged 40-60 with a high stage of physical exhaustion, and overseen by a US national.

The Russian military operation in Ukraine has stopped the spread of US military activities in Ukraine, and halted these "criminal experiments" on its civilian population, Kirillov stressed.

In the case of the research taking place at the Kharkov mental hospital, Western specialists were evacuated in January 2022, and the equipment and pharmaceutical preparations involved relocated to western Ukraine, he said.

Polish specialists have also been working with Ukraine's biolabs, Kirillov said, citing documents detailing the work of the Polish Institute of Veterinary Medicine and the US' Battelle Memorial Institute - a Pentagon contractor - on research assessing epidemiological threats and the spread of the rabies virus in Ukraine.

"In addition, documentary evidence has been obtained about Poland's funding of Lvov Medical University, which includes a participant in US military biological projects - the Institute of Epidemiology and Hygiene. Since 2002, this organisation has been implementing a retraining programme for specialists with experience working with dual-use materials and technologies", the officer said.

The German military has also been involved in research in Ukraine, Kirillov said, citing documents indicating that the Bundeswehr's Institute of Microbiology had taken some 3,500 blood serum samples from 25 Ukrainian regions back to Germany between 2016 and 2019. The officer said the Institute's as yet unidentified interest in these biomaterials "raises questions about the goals [being] pursued" by the German Armed Forces.

According to the MoD's information, along with the Munich-based Institute of Microbiology, the Berlin-based Robert Koch Institute, the Loffler Institute in Greifswald, and the Nocht Institute of Tropical Medicine in Hamburg are also participating in biological research activities in Ukraine.

Mariupol Samples Partially Recovered

An RCB Troops investigation of samples from a veterinary laboratory in Mariupol has concluded that it also may have been involved in the broader US-led biological research activities, Kirillov said, pointing to the presence of pathogens uncharacteristic of veterinary diseases, such as typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, and gas gangrene at the lab. Part of the lab's collection of samples was destroyed on 25 February, but due to the rush, some of it has been preserved intact, and is now being analysed by Russia.

"To ensure safety and safe storage, Russian specialists exported 124 strains and have organised their study", Kirillov said.

While the US rushed to vilify Russia's latest UN Security Council Arria-Formula summit on Kiev's human rights violations, one might wonder as to why Ukrainian neo-Nazi torture sites have so much in common with CIA secret prisons, says Dutch journalist Sonja van den Ende.

"I participated in the UN Security Council Arria-Formula meeting on 6 May 2022", says Sonja van den Ende, an independent journalist from Rotterdam, Netherlands. "The goal of this meeting was to present to the United Nations (UN) members evidence about war crimes committed by the Ukrainian Army in cooperation with the Azov Battalion which was provided by us, journalists on the ground, in Donbass. The evidence was presented in the form of videos and oral testimonies, from residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, especially Mariupol, Volnovakha and Melitiopol".

However, the Western UN members, especially representatives from the US, the UK, Norway, Albania, and France, paid little if any attention to the Donbass people's stories, according to the Dutch journalist. Furthermore, they behaved in an arrogant way, she adds.

"They completely ignored us and didn’t ask any questions", she notes. "I personally made some remarks at the end of the meeting. I asked them if they want WWIII and why they don't listen to us, the journalists, who are working on the ground".

Following the meeting, Rodney Hunter, political coordinator at the US Mission to the United Nations, claimed that Russia "misused" the Security Council and the UN to "spew falsehoods". He even went so far as to dismiss Russia's report and testimonies of Donbass witnesses and foreign journalists as "disinformation, lies and false narrative".

The US is using human rights and international law selectively and only when it fits in its agenda, says van den Ende: Washington routinely turns a blind eye to the crimes committed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, while pointing the finger of blame at Russia. Still, it raises the question whether Washington has any moral authority to lambast Russia, given that "the US is the largest perpetrator, who is waging wars around the globe in many countries", notes the journalist.

She is also perplexed by the US administration's current attempts to instrumentalise the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague against Russia, given that Washington never recognised the jurisdiction of this legal body. Moreover, on 2 September 2020, then-President Donald Trump slapped sanctions on ICC officials over the court's investigation into alleged war crimes committed by the US in Afghanistan. (Later these sanctions were revoked by Joe Biden).
