49 Senate Democrats Vote to Legalize Abortion up to Nine Months

Senator Joe Manchin was the lone Democrat to vote against the failed bill

Senate Democrats fell far short in their attempt to pass the “Women’s Health Prevention” Act on Wednesday. The bill, which needed 60 votes to pass, garnered 49 votes in favor and 51 against. Joe Manchin (D-WV) was the lone Senate Democrat to vote against the abortion bill, though he added he would support legislation that barred only late term procedures. Wednesday’s failed bill would legalize abortion up to nine months.

The House has already passed the “Women’s Health Protection Act”, but it has been unable to overcome the Senate filibuster. Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) describe themselves as “pro-choice” and have said they will vote for a Senate bill that banned late term abortions.

“I plan to continue working with my colleagues on legislation to maintain – not expand or restrict – the current legal framework for abortion rights in this country,” Collins said in a statement.

Senator Manchin said he would support codifying Roe v. Wade, but finds the House-passed bill to be too extreme. “The bill we have to day to vote on, the Women’s Health Protection Act, … it is not Roe v. Wade codification, it’s an expansion,” Manchin said. The West Virginia Senator went on to express his “disappointment” in the Supreme Court’s potential decision.

The failed bill would legalize abortions until birth, even if the pregnancy does not threaten the life of the mother. It would also nullify the vast majority of pro-life laws passed by individual states.

In a statement Wednesday, President Biden said that Republicans “have chosen to stand in the way of Americans’ rights to make the most personal decisions about their own bodies, families and lives.” The president then urged Democrats to vote for pro-abortion candidates in the upcoming midterm elections.

A recent Rasmussen Reports survey found that 48% of voters want to see Roe v. Wade overturned, a majority.

The Growing List Of US Companies Laying People Off

As the economy continues to grind to a halt and inflation continues to run rampant, U.S. businesses are starting to realize the obvious - that they are stretched too thin financially - and are starting to cut unnecessary fat from their respective organizations.

So much for "building back better"…

In fact, layoffs are now "sweeping across American businesses," according to a new report from Insider, who recently ran down a list of the U.S. companies that have begun hacking away at their respective labor forces.

In addition to the names you'd expect to be on the list, like Peloton (has laid off 2,800 people) and Netflix, there were also some lesser known and private company names that are making material layoffs. '

Better has been laying off 4,000 people from "late 2021" and "through the first several months of 2022". CEO Vishal Garg reportedly told employees during a Zoom meeting that the company, "lost $100 million last quarter," which he said, "was my mistake."

He didn't lay himself off, however, to the best of our understanding.

Weight loss app Noom has recently laid off hundreds of coaches as part of a total of laying off 495 people, the report says. Noom appeared to already be stretched thin, with coaches reportedly responsible for "giving advice to hundreds of users at any given time."

Thrasio, which is a company that created the Amazon aggregator market, has laid off 20% of its staff, the report says. A memo sent to employees blamed the layoffs on the company's "hypergrowth" model of acquisitions. A memo sent to employees said: "At times we have been acquiring a new company almost every week and running hard to build the infrastructure to support this growth."

Robinhood has also joined the party, laying off more than 300 people, the report says. Their layoffs come after the company's staff grew from just 700 people to 3,800 people during 2020 and 2021, when the app saw an explosion of users thanks to the pandemic and its associated free government handout cash.

Wells Fargo is also making layoffs in its mortgage-related positions. A spokesperson for the company said to Insider: "We are carrying out displacements in a transparent and thoughtful manner and providing assistance, such as severance and career counseling. Additionally, we are committed to retaining as many employees as possible and will do everything we can to help them identify other opportunities within Wells Fargo."

Pot company Canopy Growth is also laying off employees, with 250 people expected to get the axe. Canopy Growth CEO David Klein said the layoffs were "to ensure the size and scale of our operations reflect current market realities and will support the long-term sustainability of our company."

Celebrity video app Cameo is laying off 87 people, its CEO also confirmed. Last Wednesday he commented: "Today has been a brutal day at the office. I made the painful decision to let go of 87 beloved members of the Cameo Fameo."

And we have a feeling the list is just getting started…

Project Reveal: North Korean Digital Controls

North Korean computer-literate citizens, trained by the state itself, appear to be pushing back on the regime’s attempts to censor and control information access on smartphones. While this cat and mouse game between the state and its people has been ongoing for at least the last two decades, 38 North Fellow Martyn Williams and ERNW Security Analyst Niklaus Schiess examine new ways in which the people are winning.

In their report, “Project Reveal: New research into North Korea’s digital control system,” published in April by Lumen, Williams and Schiess discuss how smartphones have proven a particularly difficult technology for the state to control. Efforts to do so have centered around a system that employs digital certificates on approved content. But two North Korean defectors quoted in the report talk about the methods they used to hack the system and disable it, allowing their phones to play any video and accept any app.

The method used represents a more complex challenge to the state and is only possible because the North Korean government has been encouraging students to pursue technical careers such as computer science. The state’s immediate response appears to be the disabling of USB data transfers on smartphones and new laws that deal more harshly with the installation of rogue apps—something that was not a problem in the past.

The report also details the lengths the state has gone to in ensuring Wi-Fi services in Pyongyang are controlled and the growing challenges the state faces in trying to maintain its draconian information controls while integrating digital technologies into everyday life.

Government must invest more in R&D to keep tech sector growing, warns new report

In sobering annual study, Israel Innovation Authority says technology industry strong but plagued by challenges that require action

Israel’s technology industry is the crown jewel of the economy, driving massive growth over the past decade and cementing the country’s reputation as a high-tech nation, but the industry is plagued by serious challenges like a lack of diversity and an acute shortage of talent that could seriously hamper its ability to compete in the coming years, according to the newest Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) report released Wednesday.

These issues, combined with a lack of sufficient government spending on R&D and growing disparity between the tech sector and more traditional sectors, could hold Israel back on the global stage in the coming decades, The State of High-Tech 2022 report indicated.

“On the one hand, we are very much part of the ecosystem globally, and we are very well-positioned and compete effectively,” Sagi Dagan, vice president of the IIA’s Growth Division, told The Times of Israel in a phone briefing ahead of the publication of the report.

“On the other hand, we see a decline in the infrastructure [needed] for the future of high-tech. We need to make the right decisions for the future, and manage our risks.”

Dagan said Israel needs to consider what its tech ecosystem will look like in 2030-2040. “We do see threats,” he explained, like the Israeli government’s low expenditure in R&D as a percentage of GDP and the decline in resources allocated to industry and academia to push forward breakthrough developments. This type of government investment is usually directed at what is considered “high-risk” development in areas like food, science, agriculture, transportation, energy and space to ensure long-term security and growth, and where private funding may be lacking.
