More than 30 were rescued in the waters north of Desecheo Island, Puerto Rico, the Coast Guard said.

After the Border Patrol and other law enforcement agencies apprehended five smugglers and 25 migrants from Haiti and the Dominican Republic off the coast of Puerto Rico last fall, officials noted an uptick in illegal activity.

“We are seeing an increase in smuggling attempts across our borders,” Xavier Morales, chief patrol agent for the Ramey Border Patrol Sector, said in a statement at the time.

Why is this news coming out now? Why all the fuss from the Guardian? They seem to be nervous about something? I'm sure its not about the parents & kids being separated at the border two years ago. Gotta be a warning to other spooks in the media…

Leak investigators issued the subpoena to obtain the phone number of Stephanie Kirchgaessner, the Guardian’s investigations correspondent in Washington.

On 2 September 2020, Kirchgaessner reported that a senior justice department official nominated by Trump to be a federal judge had participated in the removal of a Texas prosecutor who had sounded the alarm over child separation.

On Thursday, the investigative reporter Jason Leopold released a redacted version of the Hud leak inquiry report obtained under freedom of information laws. It revealed that leak investigators had reviewed evidence of 127 phone calls totalling about six hours in length with “phone numbers identified as belonging to reporter Stephanie Kirchgaessner of the Guardian”, and an additional 126 phone calls about six hours and 20 minutes “with a phone number identified as belonging to the Guardian generally”.
