A solider was attacked by a bear and died of his injuries, the US Army Alaska said.

Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant was attacked at a training base. Another solider suffered minor injuries.

Wildlife officials said it was likely a case of a mother protecting her cubs.

A US Army solider was killed after he was attacked by a bear at a training base in Alaska, the army said, in what officials described as a likely case of a mother bear protecting her cubs.

The Army Alaska said in a statement on Thursday that Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant was attacked by a bear on Tuesday while working in a training area at the Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson (JBER) military facility.

He was then brought to the facility's hospital where he was declared dead, the army said.

A second solider was also attacked, sustaining minor injuries. The soldier was released from hospital after they were treated, the army said.

Plant joined the active-duty Army in January 2015 and started at the JBER in July 2021, the army said. He was from Saint Augustine, Florida, and was aged 30.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, which responded to the attack, said the bear was likely trying to defend her cubs, CNN reported.

Cyndi Wardlow, Southcentral Regional Supervisor for the department, said: "From everything we know so far, based on the scene investigation and information from other responding agencies, this appears to be a defensive attack by a female bear protecting her cubs.

"We are trying to learn everything we can about what happened to increase public safety around wildlife in Alaska."

Lt. Col. David J. Nelson described Plant as "an integral part of our organization."

"He was a positive and dedicated leader who brought joy and energy to the paratroopers who served with him," he said in the army's statement.

"He always had a smile on his face, he always went above and beyond what was asked of him, and he served as an inspiration to all who had the privilege to know him. His loss is deeply felt within our organization and we offer our sincere condolences to friends and family."

White Thomson Reuters data scientist says he was FIRED from $350k role by woke bullies for sharing data showing cops kill more unarmed white people than black people - and claiming BLM contributed to deaths of thousands

In a piece first published on Bari Weiss's Substack, Common Sense, Kriegman said he shared with collogues concerns that reports saying unarmed black people are killed by police at a disproportionately higher rate than their white counterparts was not accurate.

The Washington Post, which has led the effort to document fatal police shootings, found that police had killed 3,024 white people and 1,596 black people since 2015.

The findings highlight that black people were disproportionately affected by the shootings as they make up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, but Kriegman said the rhetoric was incomplete and when he tried proving it, he said he received backlash from fellow white co-workers.

'I was publicly derided as a 'troll,' 'confused,' 'laughable,' and 'not worth engaging with or even attempting to have an intelligent conversation' with,' Kriegman wrote.

Pence to headline Georgia rally for Kemp, defying Trump ahead of primary

By Alex Isenstadt - 54m ago

ormer Vice President Mike Pence will hold a rally with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on the eve of his GOP primary — Pence’s most aggressive political move yet in defiance of his former patron and ticket-mate, former President Donald Trump.

The event comes ahead of the May 24 primary pitting Kemp against Trump-endorsed David Perdue, the former senator who is running for governor. The former president has made Kemp one of his top Republican targets of the midterm election, attacking him mercilessly ever since Kemp refused to intervene and overturn Georgia’s vote count during the 2020 election, when the state went narrowly for President Joe Biden.

In a statement, Pence called Kemp “one of the most successful conservative governors in America."

“Brian Kemp is my friend, a man dedicated to faith, family and the people of Georgia,” Pence said. “I am proud to offer my full support for four more years of Brian Kemp as governor of the great state of Georgia.”

Pence has shown increasing willingness to undercut Trump since Trump savaged the former vice president for certifying the 2020 election results instead of taking legally dubious steps to overturn them. Pence has stood by his actions on Jan. 6, 2021, and he has called on the Republican Party to move on from focusing on the last presidential election, even as Trump continues to litigate it.
