It was not until the 1950s that commercial Baby formulas began to slowly gain acceptance in the US.

In the early 19th century, it was observed that infants fed unaltered cow's milk had a high mortality rate and were prone to "indigestion" and dehydration compared with those who were breastfed.

In 1865, chemist Justus von Liebig developed, patented, and marketed an infant food, first in a liquid form and then in a powdered form for better preservation. Liebig's formula—consisting of cow's milk, wheat and malt flour, and potassium bicarbonate—was considered the perfect infant food (Radbill, 1981).

From the 1930s or early 1940s, most formulas fed to infants in the United States were prepared by mixing evaporated milk or fresh cow's milk with water and adding carbohydrate.–Feb 1, 2001

What was in baby formula in the 1950s?

The recipe calls for 13 ounces of evaporated milk, 20 ounces of water, and 2 level teaspoons of Karo syrup to be heated together and divided into 6 bottles.

By the 1940s and through the 1960s, most infants who were not breastfed received evaporated milk formula, as well as vitamins and iron supplements.

It is estimated that, in 1960, 80% of bottle-fed infants in the US were being fed with an evaporated milk formula.

Watering down existing formula is not recommended, according to the AAP. “While it may be tempting to water down formula to stretch it out, it is not safe to do that,” according to an article by Steven A. Abrams, MD, FAAP, published on healthychildren.org.6 “Always follow label instructions or those given to you by your pediatrician. Watering down formula is dangerous.”

Additionally, AAP does not recommend making homemade formula and advises parents as such. Although it is not recommended, using toddler formula if there is no other choice is safe for a few days for babies close to a year of age. In a similar situation, using whole cow’s milk for a brief period of time is also safe.

“This is not ideal and should not become routine but is a better option than diluting formula or making homemade formula,” Abrams wrote.

When switching formulas, relay to parents the need to stay within the same category as their current mixture. These categories include milk-based, soy-based, and sensitive varieties.

It is safe to swap formulas right away if there isn’t any more of the original formula left, but if there is time, it is recommended to stretch out the change over a few days.

Pediatricians say they should be the first contact.

Personally, Gates can take his frankenstein baby formula and shove it.

I would never give a baby vaxed breast milk!
