Depends on the twist of the rifling. .223/5.56mm does a lot of weird things depending on how fast you spin it. Put a 1 in 7 twist on it and you can shoot someones head off hitting them in the leg. Put a 1 in 12 on it and it goes way deeper before it starts to tumble.

My opinion is the bullets went through so fast they lost almost no energy before exiting and impeding into the floor. 1 in 12 twist on the barrel of his rifle.

Start a dig with what the Army did to stoners design. The original design was ripping people apart in Vietnam, The next batch was next to useless. Got soldiers killed. Therein lies the fuckery that is the M16/M4 design. Much Military Industrial Complex asshole shit mixed into this story. Powder is but one issue here.
