Rudy Giuliani's star 'voter fraud' witness booted off the ballot in Michigan

Raw Story - Yesterday 8:31 PM

On Tuesday, the Detroit Free Press reported that Mellissa Carone, Rudy Giuliani's infamous voter fraud witness in Michigan, has been disqualified from running for Congress.

"Carone was planning to challenge Sen. Mike MacDonald, R-Macomb Township, in the 11th District," reported Craig Mauger. "She was previously disqualified from running for the state House after she submitted a faulty affidavit attesting that she had no outstanding campaign finance issues."

"Carone had gained national attention by making unproven claims of fraud in Michigan's 2020 election," said the report. "Her testimony at a December 2020 state House committee hearing alongside former President Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani was parodied on 'Saturday Night Live.'"

"Michigan election law requires candidates to vow that 'as of the date of the affidavit, all statements, reports, late filing fees, and fines required of the candidate or any candidate committee organized to support the candidate's election under the Michigan campaign finance act … have been filed or paid,'" noted the report. "The candidates disqualified over campaign finance issues 'all had outstanding campaign finance reports or unpaid fines at the time they signed the affidavit of identity,' the Secretary of State's office said."

A colorful figure even before her hearing, Carone previously was put on probation after a strange incident in which she allegedly sent sex videos to her fiancé’s ex-wife.

In the race, Carone has gathered more controversy by claiming that public schools are plotting to "eliminate the white people" and that the COVID vaccine is the "mark of the beast" and contains aborted fetal tissue.

Former US Rep. Corrine Brown to plead guilty in fraud case

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, whose initial conviction in a charity and tax fraud case was tossed out by an appeals court, will plead guilty before a second trial, according to court documents filed Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan scheduled a change of plea hearing Wednesday morning for Brown, a once-powerful Florida Democrat who had previously pleaded not guilty to 18 charges including mail and wire fraud, conspiracy and filing false tax returns.

Brown's lawyers did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment. It was not clear which specific charges Brown would plead guilty to.

The second trial had been set to begin Sept. 12. Brown's original 2017 conviction was thrown out by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals because Corrigan improperly removed a juror during deliberations who had said the “Holy Spirit” told him she was innocent.

Brown, 75, served about two years of a five-year sentence before her release in April 2020 because of fears her age made her more susceptible to the coronavirus pandemic in prison.

Before the fraud case, Brown represented the Jacksonville area in Congress for about 25 years. In 1992, after a state legislative career, she became one of the first three Black people elected to Congress from Florida since Reconstruction.

Prosecutors said she siphoned money from the One Door for Education Foundation for personal use. They said the pattern of fraud by Brown and her top aide included using hundreds of thousands of dollars from the foundation to pay for lavish parties, trips and shopping excursions.

Federal prosecutors said Brown, her chief of staff and One Door’s executive director used the charity to bring in more than $800,000 between 2012 and 2016, through donations and events including a high-profile golf tournament at TPC Sawgrass.

The Virginia-based One Door gave out only one scholarship, for $1,200, to an unidentified person in Florida, according to court documents.

‘Person of Interest’ Sketch Released in Mysterious Double Homicide of New Hampshire Couple on a Hike

Police in New Hampshire are searching for a brown-haired white man in his twenties or thirties who was seen in the area where a middle-age couple was brutally murdered on April 18 while out on a hike near their home in Concord.

The bodies of Stephen, 67, and Djeswende Reid, 66, who were avid hikers and former international aid workers, were found on April 21 after their family reported them missing. Both had been shot on the trail multiple times, according to autopsy reports.

On Tuesday, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella and Concord Chief of Police Bradley Osgood released a sketch of a man they called a “person of interest,” who was reportedly seen in the area at the time. They also increased the reward to $33,500 for information about the man—who they say was wearing a dark blue jacket, khaki pants, and carrying a black backpack that day. He is described as approximately 5 feet 10 inches with a medium build. He was clean-shaven at the time.

Anonymous donors gave $20,000 and $5,000 toward the reward money, police said in a Facebook post.

When Stephen Reid didn’t show up for his tennis date the day after they went for a hike, a friend called the couple’s son Brian, who went to their apartment complex. He called police who determined there was no sign of foul play, forced entry, or anything that led them to believe they were targeted first in their home. “The bed was neatly made and a window was open. Both their phones are still in the apartment,” the son said at the time. “My dad’s wallet is also still in the apartment, and both their cars are here.”

Police canvassed the area, asking anyone with a home-surveillance camera to check footage to see where the couple might be, or who else might have walked near their home. It is unclear if these videos led to the identification of the person of interest.

The couple were both aid workers and Peace Corps volunteers, avid basketball players, and adventurists. They lived and worked in Senegal, Chad, and Niger during their life together. “Steve’s thirty-plus-year career as an international development specialist in service to the world’s most vulnerable through USAID humanitarian projects could not have been made possible without the love, care and support of Wendy, who also helped recently resettled refugees acclimate and thrive in the United States,” the Reid family wrote in the statement after their bodies were discovered.
