U.S. To Dismantle At Tanf Base In Exchange For Iranian Withdrawal From Southern Syria: Media
The US is considering to close down its military base at the Syria-Iraq border in exchange for Iranian withdrawal from southern Syria, the Saudi-owned Asharq Al-Awsat reported on June 3.
According to the report, the proposition was brought up by US Secretary of State aide David Satterfield in a meeting with Russian, Jordanian and Turkish officials in the framework of negotiations of a deal on the situation in southern Syria.
On June 2, Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said that Damascus will not approve any agreement on southern Syria until US forces withdraw from their base in the border area of At Tanf.
On the same day, Israeli media reported citing an senior Israeli official denied reports that the sides have reached a deal on withdrawal of Iranian forces from southern Syria. According to this report, Israel still wants all Iranian and Iranian-backed forces to leave Syria.
On June 3, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani denied reports on talks between Iran and Israel on the conflict in Syria. However, he did not deny that some kind of a deal over the situation in Syria could be negotiated.
