US and South Korea retaliate against North

Washington and Seoul made shows of force in response to Pyongyang’s latest missile test

The United States and South Korea mobilized warplanes and fired off several surface-to-surface missiles following the latest weapons test by the North, which saw three projectiles launched into the ocean.

Seoul’s military mobilized around 30 F-15 fighter jets and fired a Hyunmoo-II missile into the East Sea, its Joint Chiefs of Staff said, as cited by Yonhap, while US forces shot a MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) in the same direction, both in retaliation to Pyongyang’s series of missile tests on Wednesday morning.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs also admitted that a similar ‘Elephant Walk’ exercise involving a number of newer F-35 fighters was conducted the day before Pyongyang’s latest test to “deter ballistic missile provocations.”

The office of President Yoon Suk-yeol harshly denounced Pyongyang’s test – which involved at least three projectiles, including what was believed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) – calling it a “grave provocation that violates UN Security Council resolutions, raises tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia and threatens international peace.”

Yoon also ordered “measures for the activation of extended deterrence and strengthening of the South Korea-US combined defense posture” and to enhance readiness across Seoul’s military.

Pyongyang’s 17th missile test this year came soon after US President Joe Biden departed Japan for Washington following his first official visit to Asia, which lasted five days.

Officials in Seoul say the presumed ICBM traveled some 224 miles (360km) and reached an altitude of 335 miles (540km). Japan also detected the launch, reporting that one missile flew in an “irregular trajectory” for a distance of around 466 miles (750km), while the country’s defense chief said it landed just outside of Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

Former GOP Rep. David Jolly says 'anti-Christian theme' exists within the Republican Party

Former GOP Rep. David Jolly said that there is an "anti-Christian" streak running through the modern Republican Party.

During an appearance on MSNBC, Jolly said that the GOP has "an anti-democratic, authoritarian … xenophobic, culture war, divisive, angry platform."

"There is an anti-Christian theme in today's Republican Party. This whole 'what would Jesus do' constituency, absolutely not. It is adverse to everything that Jesus would do," he said.

Jolly said he believes Democrats should "take back that faith argument from a party today who is acting with values antithetical to the Christian and faith-based evangelical movement."

His comments come as Democrats around the country bemoan the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade, thereby enabling states to enact abortion bans.

Jolly previously spent time serving as a congressman from the state of Florida — he entered office in March 2014 after winning special election, and then won a full term during the 2014 general election contest. But Jolly lost his 2016 re-election bid to Democrat Charlie Crist.

In 2018, Jolly noted that he had departed from the GOP "and registered with no party affiliation." Jolly is now the executive chairman of the SAM party.

"We’re creating the new political party for the millions of Americans who are tired of choosing between the lesser of two evils. We’re made up of people who’ve been betrayed by their tribes and are brave enough to build something better," the party's website states. "No matter what labels you may have used in the past (or the ones you still do), if you’re tired of black and white choices in this brilliantly colorful world — welcome home."

In the wake of a deadly mass shooting at a Texas school on Tuesday, Jolly tweeted, "We can forestall the political conversation or acknowledge it. One party is willing to accept the status quo. One party is trying to change the status quo. If gun violence prevention and ending school shootings is what informs your politics, consider voting Democratic."
