Russia Blacklist

#617 Renee Polreis

Rene Polreis was convicted of child abuse resulting in death and sentenced to 18 years in prison. David was adopted from Tula, Russia 6 months before his death. The boy's name was David A. Polreis (Konstantin Shlepin). The child was 2 1/2 years old.

Her sentence was reduced. Again, many people stepped forward to speak for the poor mother, how she was a good Christian and such, and her sentence was reduced. As with many of these cases, Polaris claimed that the child was injuring himself.

Greeley, Colorado. Firemen and paramedics rushed in to the homoe to find the child lying unconscious on the tile floor, in red sleeper pajamas. Blond and fair-skinned, he looked peaceful with flushed cheeks, but brown vomit leaked from his nose and his half-opened blue eyes looked distant, one pupil larger than the other. As the firemen searched for a pulse, they unzipped David's pajamas to a startling sight. From his shoulders to his knees were fresh purple and red bruises, and broken blisters on his buttocks.

Later that day, two broken and bloody wooden spoons, one wrapped in a bloodstained diaper, were retrieved from the Polreises' garbage. Renee had not shown up at either hospital; instead she'd spent part of the morning in her minivan parked in front of her house, calling attorneys on a cellular phone.

Polreis’s accounts kept changing during the original trial. First it was that the child had beaten himself to death. Then it was that David had attacked Renee, and she killed the 24-pound boy in self-defense.

Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) / Attachment Therapy (AT)

The parents had been taking AT therapy by therapists trained at the Attachment Center of Evergreen (ACE).

At the sentence-reduction hearing in 2000, Polreis’s lawyers called Foster Cline to the stand. Cline, a former Evergreen psychiatrist who lectures and publishes out of Idaho, has been one of Colorado’s most controversial medical figures, and a founder of the AT movement.

Mourners at little David’s funeral were asked to make contributions in his name — to ACE.
