States competitively bid out WIC contracts for formula, but those bids rely upon sole-source contracts.
Moms receiving WIC assistance can only purchase ONE brand of formula, from their state’s "approved" provider. 🍼
So in many states, the "approved" provider ends up with a near-monopoly on the formula market.
And, retailers give their state contracted brand greater preference, so most non-WIC families buy it also. 💰
The Biden administration has been talking about the need to "promote competition" but LITTLE on how this gov't program actually stifles a robust marketplace for formula. 👶🏻
