Turkish police crack down on mafia in nationwide operations

Police launched two separate operations against organized crime in the early hours of Thursday, with arrest warrants issued for dozens of suspects.

The biggest operation targeted coastal cities and fittingly, it was dubbed “mucilage,” named after a thick layer of a harmful substance that choked life in the country’s Marmara Sea last year.In 16 cities littoral to the country’s seas, police raided several locations to capture 315 suspects in simultaneous operations.The Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Department of the Turkish National Police (KOM) coordinated the operations in Adana, Antalya, Aydın, Balıkesir, Bursa, Çanakkale, Istanbul, Izmir, Mersin, Muğla, Yalova, Artvin, Giresun, Ordu, Samsun and Zonguldak.

The suspects are accused of running or working for “mafia-like criminal organizations” and/or supplying arms to those groups. The operations aimed to “clear out” criminal elements in those cities ahead of the high tourism season, according to Turkish media outlets. Some suspects were accused of extorting money from tourism facilities like hotels or forcibly taking control of businesses. Others are accused of extorting several businesses and defrauding people by using fake IDs under the names of state officials. Some are charged with fraud using fake call centers they set up. Police determined 13 separate criminal organizations involved in those crimes earlier. Another 17 gangs are accused of supplying illegal arms to those groups.

In Istanbul, a separate operation was launched by organized crime units against 74 suspects. With the assistance of Special Operations police, police squads raided two criminal organizations that were active in the Avcılar, Beylikdüzü and Esenyurt districts on the city’s European side. The suspects are accused of running a criminal organization, robbery, inflicting injury, drug trade and forced prostitution. The number of detainees was not clear yet but police confirmed E.U. and E.K., two leaders of the criminal organization, were captured.

Along with gangs’ “area of operation” in three Istanbul districts, raids took place in the districts of Fatih, Sultangazi and Başakşehir. Police seized a large cache of weapons and drugs in simultaneous raids.

Fight against organized crime is a priority for the Interior Ministry of the country, where mobsters have gotten away with lenient sentences and had close ties to prominent figures, including politicians and intelligence services, in the past. Until the late 1990s, gang shootings were common, especially in big cities. Though the killings continued into the 2000s, mafia figures of past decades appear to lose power, with many jailed. In the past six years, security forces ended the activities of 358 criminal gangs, including 30 operating nationwide, through continuous operations.

Op Sceptre: more than 790 arrests following Met crackdown on violent crime

Met crackdown on violent crime leads to more than 790 arrests and 280 knives taken off the streets in just one week.

The Metropolitan Police Service ramped up activity to target knife crime as part of the national operation, ‘Op Sceptre’.

Officers across the Met used a number of different tactics, including increased patrols in violence hotspots; warrants to target those known to carry knives; and weapons sweeps in areas known for discarded knives. In one instance, local officers in Barnet and a specialist search team were joined by a mother who lost her son to knife crime and a community safety group on a community weapon sweep where several hidden weapons were found.

Working closely with the British Transport Police, knife arches were used at transport hubs to deter people from carrying weapons and drugs on trains and tubes. Met Special Constables and Police Cadets volunteered in their own time to assist officers in the operation, including visiting businesses to educate them and ensure they were not – and do not in the future - sell knives irresponsibly.

We know that early intervention is key to curbing violence, so crucially there was also a focus on education, diversion and prevention. Officers engaged with young people and community members through school presentations and community meetings. Officers in north-west London, for example, arranged for a number of local young people to visit the Old Bailey Court where they listened to presentations about the impact of knife crime. They heard from a trauma surgeon who described the medical aftermath of stabbings; an ex-offender; as well as a criminal barrister.

In total the operation, which ran from Monday, 16 May to Sunday, 22 May, resulted in:

288 knives recovered;

792 arrests;

51 warrants;

154 community meetings and educational events, engaging with 5,391 individuals;

203 school presentations and engagements, involving 15,015 young people;

210 retailer visits;

1,578 weapon sweeps.

The operation was coordinated by the Met’s Violent Crime Taskforce (VCTF), who manage all London-wide operations focussed on tackling violent crime.

Chief Inspector Rob Ranstead, who led the operation, said: “Our mission is to bear down on violence and make communities safer across London – it’s our priority.

“Operation Sceptre is an intensification of the work we already do every single day and officers will not stop doing everything they can to target those carrying weapons on our streets.

“Policing alone can’t solve violent crime and I am grateful to all those partners and community members who worked alongside us during this activity and joined our efforts.”

  • We all have a part to play in tackling violent crime. It can be as simple as giving information about an incident or those who carry a weapon. Any information you give to the independent charity Crimestoppers can make a difference in reducing knife crime and the harm it causes to families. Fill in their quick online form or call 0800 555 111 – 100% anonymously. It could save a life.

Documents Reveal Secret US Plans For Apocalyptic Scenarios When President May Activate Wartime Powers for National Security Emergencies

Newly disclosed documents obtained by the New York Times reveal secret US plans for ‘apocalyptic’ scenarios when a president may activate wartime powers.

The documents – known as presidential emergency action documents – were provided to the New York Times by the Brennan Center for Justice after it gathered the materials from the Bush presidential library under the Freedom of Information Act.

Only 500 pages were disclosed to the Brennan Center for Justice – 6,000 classified pages were withheld.

“The newly disclosed documents show that there were 48 of the directives when the Bush administration took office; by 2008, that number had grown to 56. Vice President Dick Cheney’s office was involved in reviewing and “clearing” the orders. The documents do not indicate any consultation with Congress.” The Times reported.

“Several of the files, provided to The New York Times by the Brennan Center for Justice, show that the Bush-era effort partly focused on a law that permits the president to take over or shut down communications networks in wartime. That suggests the government may have developed or revised such an order in light of the explosive growth in the 1990s of the consumer internet.” The Times reported.

More from The New York Times:

Newly disclosed documents have shed a crack of light on secret executive branch plans for apocalyptic scenarios — like the aftermath of a nuclear attack — when the president may activate wartime powers for national security emergencies.

Until now, public knowledge of what the government put into those classified directives, which invoke emergency and wartime powers granted by Congress or otherwise claimed by presidents, has been limited to declassified descriptions of those developed in the early Cold War. In that era, they included steps like imposing martial law, rounding up people deemed dangerous and censoring news from abroad.

It has not been clear what is in the modern directives — known as presidential emergency action documents — because under administrations of both parties, none have been made public or shown to Congress. But the newly disclosed documents, which relate to the George W. Bush administration’s efforts to revise the draft orders after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, offer clues.

Even though it is unclear how the directives have evolved since the later stages of the Cold War, Ms. Goitein said they have likely expanded to include other scenarios beyond a devastating nuclear attack. The documents show that later versions extended from one category to seven, although their topics remain secret, and fall within the jurisdiction of agencies with different areas of focus.

China, Russia veto UN sanctions

The remaining 13 Security Council members unanimously supported the US-drafted resolution against North Korea

The UN Security Council failed to reach common ground on new sanctions against Pyongyang on Thursday. Washington proposed the sanctions in the wake of North Korea’s latest missile test this week, on the heels of US President Joe Biden's Asia tour.

The vote came just a day after North Korea was accused of test-launching its largest intercontinental ballistic missile and two others. Ahead of the vote, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield called for unity in the face of “a threat to the entire international community.”

However, China and Russia vetoed new sanctions on humanitarian grounds, pointing to their futility and even “inhumanity,” as North Korea struggled to contain a massive Covid-19 outbreak.

The UNSC imposed sanctions on North Korea back in 2006, following its first nuclear test, and has tightened them over the years. Since the latest round of restrictions in 2017, Moscow and Beijing have increasingly been arguing that further pressure is a road to nowhere and unlikely to force Pyongyang to disarm unilaterally.

Dem State Rep. Goes On Facebook Meltdown, Tells ‘Small-Penis’ Gun Supporters To Kill Themselves

Oh My

Delaware Rep. John Kowalko told a conservative named “C-Dawg Rowe” that Rowe and his fellow gun supporters should kill themselves. The Facebook conversation was about masks. Of course, Kowalko — who represents Newark — is in favor of slave masks. Kowalko has apologized in the past for his profane and hateful use of social media.

“I’ve got a suggestion for you and your fellow gun worshipers (sic),” Kowalko stated to C-Dawg Rowe. “Instead of wearing a mask stick the barrel of your piece in your mouth. Maybe those 14 children killed in Texas would have been safer from the virus and you psycho, small-penis gun fondlers.”

The Delaware politician’s Facebook comment is consistent with his past behavior.

In January 2020, John Kowalko penned a profanity-laced tirade over Delaware’s minimum wage. The New Years day email targeted his Republican opponents, as well as fellow Delaware Democrats who are not sufficiently progressive for Kowalko.

“Eff all the R’s and D’s that voted for [Republican State Rep. Mike] Ramone’s ‘training wage’ and ‘young person’ wage exemptions to the minimum wage bill,” Kowalko wrote. “Eff the House Speaker for not getting Kim Williams’ and my bill to repeal Ramone’s exemptions out of committee and on the floor for a vote. Eff Speaker Pete [Schwartzkopf] and his unadulterated lie (personally to my face) that we had made some kind of promise to the Republicans in order to get their vote on the Bond Bill two years ago (an absolute, unadulterated lie).”

The email, which was triggered by a minimum wage hike in neighboring New Jersey, ended with: “Oh, by the way have a Happy New Year all of you selfish bastards out there.”

John Kowalko, who has been in office since 2006, is retiring at the end of his term.

CA Gov. Newsom Lashes Out at Governor Abbott Over Texas Shooting, Announces Plan to Sign Over a Dozen Gun Control Bills by Next Month

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) slammed Texas Governor Gregg Abbott over the deadly mass shooting at a Texas elementary school.

18-year-old Salvador Ramos fatally shot 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday.

Like clockwork, the Democrats and their media stenographers are calling for more gun control laws.

Governor Newsom announced his plans to sign over a dozen new gun control bills by the end of June as he attacked Abbott.

California already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country.

“Do not give in to the cynicism and all the crap that you heard in that press conference around evil and mental health,” Newsom said slamming Texas Governor Abbott.

Newsom will sign a law that gives people a right to sue gun manufacturers and dealers.

He is also planning on signing a law that limits “ghost guns.”

HUGE

China Paralyzed As Feud Erupts Between Xi And Li Over Covid Response

For the past several months there had been rumors that a quiet feud had erupted within Beijing's top echelons, the result of disagreement within the communist party whether Xi Jinping's "zero covid" policy was the proper solution for the country of 1.4 billion and which two and a half years ago unleashed the coronavirus plague on the world. Well, now it's official because as Bloomberg reported this morning, China finds itself gripped by "discord" at the very top level, with president Xi and premier Li on opposite sides of the the "zero covid" ring.

As Bloomberg notes, shortly after Premier Li Keqiang held the previously discussed "rare" video call with thousands of Chinese officials across the nation to warn of an even worse economic crisis than two years ago, and calling on them to better balance Covid controls and economic growth, those same government officials charged with implementing policy at the ground level found themselves stumped and unsure whether they should still listen to: supreme leader Xi - who continues to emphasize the need for officials to push for zero Covid-19 cases - or Li, who continuously urges them to bolster the economy and hit preordained growth targets.

This apparent dilemma has led to paralysis within a nation normally hailed for speedy implementation of orders from above, Bloomberg reports, citing eight unnamed senior local government officials.

While analysts saw Li’s impromptu meeting as an attempt to strengthen consensus on the urgency to revive the economy, four senior officials said it did little to change their view that controlling the Covid outbreak still took priority: "One said that from a personal career perspective, a cadre’s hard work means nothing if they fail to contain an outbreak, while the upside for kicking off economic projects was limited."

For a glaring example of just how deep the schism within China's core runs, one should look at who did not attend Li’s mammoth meeting - which brought together cadres right down to the county level, featuring officials from nearly all government departments including propaganda, environment, and utilities, according to notices on county-level government websites - the top-ranking Communist Party official for many cities was absent because they had to focus on ensuring Covid control, said a BBG source, adding that it signaled that pandemic work still trumped the economy. Attendance for party heads wasn’t mandatory.

Which is bad news for Li who is tasked with restoring the economy… without actually being allowed to do anything:

“He is being put in the impossible position of trying to rescue the economy without being able to adjust the one policy zero-Covid that is causing the most economic damage,” McArver said, referring to Li.

Baby formula export scheme worth $200M lands Florida trio in prison

Prosecutors claim scammers used funds to buy $9M mansion, 48-foot yacht, several properties

A Florida trio was recently sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a $200 million baby formula fraud scheme that began some nine years before the current critical shortages.

U.S. District Court Judge Roy K. Altman sentenced South Florida residents Johnny Grobman, 48, Raoul Doekhie, 53, and Sherida Nabi, 57, each to 18 years in prison on Friday. He also ordered the three to forfeit over $200 million in fraudulently obtained profits. The three used the profits from the baby formula sales to buy a $9 million mansion in Florida, a 48-foot yacht, and several properties outside the U.S.

Federal prosecutors in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida said the trio convinced U.S. infant formula manufacturers to sell them the products at deeply reduced prices, in some cases receiving up to 60% discounts, by claiming they had a government tender to purchase the formula on behalf of the impoverished country of Suriname in South America.

Instead of shipping the formula to Suriname, the three sold the products for full price in the U.S., raking in record profits.

Following a 13-day trial in February 2020, a federal jury found Grobman, Doekhie and Nabi guilty of conspiring to commit wire fraud; wire fraud; money laundering; conspiring to obtain pre-retail medical products worth $5,000 or more by fraud or deception, theft of pre-retail medical products; and smuggling goods from the United States.

Two weeks after the trial ended, Grobman requested a new trial, which Judge Altman later denied.

As of publication, attorneys for the three did not respond to FreightWaves’ request seeking comment. Court records confirm the three are now in custody. However, a reason was not given for why the sentencing took place more than two years after the convictions.

The sentencing comes at a time when the U.S. is dealing with a nationwide infant formula shortage after a massive recall at manufacturing giant Abbott Laboratories’ Michigan plant.

Guns and drugs worth millions seized as 45 people are arrested by NSW Police amid major crackdown on illegal activity

NSW Police have continued a major blitz on organised crime arresting 45 people and seizing several guns and illegal drugs with a street value of more than $4 million. See the pictures here.

New South Wales Police have continued a major crackdown on illegal activity in an attempt to stop drug syndicates across the state.

In the past 48-hours officers have arrested 45 people, seized eight firearms, a hydraulic press and more than 20kg of MDMA and other prohibited drugs in a statewide raid under Operation Hawk.

The blitz comes after a large scale operation conducted by Taskforce Erebus on Tuesday saw the arrest of 18 men in south-west Sydney for various drug, firearm, proceeds of crime and participation in crime offences.

Operation Hawk Commander Detective Superintendent Jason Weinstein said the latest operation followed a successful one earlier this year but with a greater focus on Sydney’s regions.

“This week we’ve succeeded in demobilising a significant drug supply syndicate operating from Sydney’s south-west, but also know the tentacles of illicit activity stretch far beyond our cities,” Det Supt Weinstein said.

“NSW attracts around 40 per cent of Australia’s national organised crime population – many of whom attempt to evade the attention of police by operating outside of the Sydney metropolitan area.”

The sale of illegal drugs in NSW is worth at least $3.7 billion per year at a street level and is believed to be the root cause of the sudden rise in violent murders sweeping Sydney.

“These arrests send a clear message to anyone involved in organised crime: that we are aware of your illicit activities and will hold you accountable irrespective of your location,” Det Supt Weinstein said.

During the raids on Tuesday Raptor Squad officers searched a home at Fairfield West and found a large hydraulic press, electronic devices and more than 11kg of MDMA.

Two men aged 22 and two men aged 21 were arrested and taken to Liverpool Police Station.

Police later searched another home in Fairfield West where they found a further 12kg of MDMA, 2.5kg of cocaine and around 40 grams of a crystal substance suspected to be methylamphetamine.

The estimated street value of the seized drugs is believed to be more than $4 million. The four men arrested were refused bail and will appear at Fairfield Local Court on July 18.

Officers attached to the Hunter Valley Proactive Crime Team searched a home at Weston near Cessnock where a 49-year-old man, who is a member of the Life and Death Outlaw Motorcycle Group, was taken to hospital following a medical episode.

Police then located a “significant quantity” of cannabis and established a crime scene before executing a search warrant.

They found two rifles and a .22 calibre pistol, 350 rounds of ammunition, five gel blasters, an electronic stun device, almost 150 grams of methylamphetamine, 2kg of cannabis and $8,300 cash, among other items.

Once the man was discharged from hospital he was taken to Cessnock Police Station where he was charged with 33 offences and refused bail to appear at Cessnock Local Court on June 15.

Penny Wong promises 'new Australia' to Pacific allies

Newly minted Foreign Minister Penny Wong has delivered her first address in the office, with a keynote speech at the Pacific Islands Forum.

Forum Secretary-General Henry Puna noted it was Wong's first bilateral visit just four days into the job.

"Your visit to Fiji, indeed, your first bilateral visit, represents a very strong shift in Australia's regional outlook," Puna said.

He said the forum welcomed the Labor government's pledges to act on climate change and to adopt the Uluru Statement From The Heart.

Wong said the "new Australian government" signalled a "new Australia" that would work cooperatively and in partnership with Pacific nations - particularly on climate change.

"I know the imperative we all share to take serious action to reduce emissions and transform our economies," she said.

"Nothing is more central to the security and economies of the Pacific."

She threw a jab out at previous Coalition governments, saying Australia had "neglected its responsibility".

"But whether it manifests in rising sea levels, or in disastrous bushfires and catastrophic flooding, climate change is happening across the Pacific family," she said.

Wong also took the opportunity to lay out the advantages of Australia as a strategic partner in the Pacific, even as China embarks on a diplomatic blitz in the region.

"We understand the security of any one Pacific family member rests on the security of all, and we have a collective responsibility as we face these challenges to secure our region's interest today and in the future," she said
