Who says seeds are not alive?

They are measured by there viability. As time passed or exposure to elements etc occurs they lose their viability.

A seed contains its own energy source from which it initially get going until it can absorb its energy from the sun.

Everything about it sounds alive to me.

A better question is how are plants connected to humans and humans to it.

I remember reading about a scientist doing studies on plants and he had some kind of way to measure the plants response to stimuli.

He gets involved in a relationship and when he and the lady are miles away having sex. The plants give off a measurable response.

Humans are learning to pay more attention to the soil and the living organisms that are part of the soil food web.

Feed the soil and the soil feeds the plants.

Some thing like PH is easily measured but very complex. And just simply varying a little to acidic or a little to caustic can prevent uptake of vitamins and minerals that are right there in the soil.
