West mulls having Russian oligarchs buy way out of sanctions
Western allies are considering whether to allow Russian oligarchs to buy their way out of sanctions and using the money to rebuild Ukraine, according to government officials familiar with the matter.
Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland proposed the idea at a G-7 finance ministers’ meeting in Germany last week.
Freeland raised the issue after oligarchs spoke to her about it, one official said. The Canadian minister knows some Russian oligarchs from her time as a journalist in Moscow.
The official said the Ukrainians were aware of the discussions. The official said it’s also in the West’s interests to have prominent oligarchs dissociate themselves from Russian President Vladimir Putin while at the same time providing funding for Ukraine.
“We would not be talking about this if there wasn’t some comfort on the part of the Ukrainians,” the official said. “We need to know that it works for them, too.”

So when my little grandson was excitedly tearing at the gift-wrapped present at his four-year-old birthday party and, lo and behold, there was his first gift — a shiny “toy” gun that, damn it, looked just like a real gun — I let out a shriek.
The noisy merriment became stone silence.
Mazal Tov. I sure got their attention. I then held my nose, like the gun was smelly, and retched like I was about to throw up. I didn’t care if the giver of this gift (who happened to be his well-meaning babysitter) was insulted; I’d beg for her forgiveness later, but now was the crucial time to make my point.

Hillary Clinton personally approved her campaign's plans in fall 2016 to share information with a reporter about an uncorroborated alleged server backchannel between Donald Trump and a top Russian bank, her former campaign manager testified Friday in federal court.
Robby Mook said he attended a meeting with other senior campaign officials where they learned about strange cyberactivity that suggested a relationship between the Trump Organization and Alfa Bank, which is based in Moscow. The group decided to share the information with a reporter, and Mook subsequently ran that decision by Clinton herself.
"We discussed it with Hillary," Mook said, later adding that "she agreed with the decision."
A campaign staffer later passed the information to a reporter from Slate magazine, which the campaign hoped the reporter would "vet it out, and write what they believe is true," Mook said.
