Russia Blacklist

#762, Chao Patrick Ting Hsi

I'm having trouble with this strange jumble of letters that is supposed to be a name. Patrick is the fat pink starfish friend of SpongeBob's. But I doubt that Patric ever did anything that the Russians would take offense to.

Other than "Patrick," the only name that rings a bell in that mess is "Chao." I'm also a country boy and not sure about this, but I believe that in China, the surname comes first and the given name comes next. So Chao Patrick Ting Hsi in China might be something like Patrick Ting Hsi Chao, or something similar if he were an American citizen…

Of course, Elaine Chao was most recently the US Secretary of Transportation.

She's been much more than that though. She’s among the very few Americans who has been appointed to two Presidential cabinet positions: U. S. Secretary of Transportation and U. S. Secretary of Labor. In fact, she is the first Asian American woman to be appointed to the President’s cabinet in U.S. history. Secretary Chao was also President and CEO of United Way of America and Director of the Peace Corps. She had previously served as Deputy Secretary of Transportation; Chair, Federal Maritime Commission; Deputy Maritime Administrator; and White House Fellow.

And the neatest part of it all is that she is almost certainly a spook!

and she's probably a spook for CHINA

Elaine Chao Used DOT Resources For Personal Errands, Family Business, IG Report Says

The Transportation Department watchdog launched the probe into Chao's actions as secretary following news reports that detailed her interactions with family in her post as the agency's head. That included an official trip to China in 2017 in which her father and sister were set to join her and participate in high-level meetings.

Of course, Elaine Chao is also married to Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. – Which makes a lot of sense given the current state of things in the USA.

I'll keep trying to unscramble the other letters in the name and see if I can come up with something… Hopefully we can track this name to Elaine Chao.

Elaine Chao previously served as secretary of labor under George W. Bush, where she was criticized for shifting away from the agency’s enforcement practices. While at the Department of Transportation (DOT), Chao’s prioritization of Kentucky interests and potential involvement in her family’s international shipping business has drawn concerns of favoritism and unchecked conflicts of interest.

At the same time Chao’s Kentucky favoritism was coming to light, questions were also arising about her role in her family’s prominent shipping company, Foremost Group.

In one instance from 2017, an official at the American embassy in Beijing sent an email to the Department of State seeking ethics advice about questionable arrangements for a Transportation Department trip to China. Among the official’s concerns were requests from Chao’s office for accommodations for Chao family members associated with Foremost Group. Chao subsequently canceled the trip.

Her father's name is James Chao

From NYTimes:

The family of Elaine Chao, the transportation secretary and wife of Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, has high-level political connections not only in the United States but also in China. That gives the family unusual status in the world’s two largest economies.

Through interviews, industry filings and government documents from both countries, The New York Times found that the Chaos, and by extension Mr. McConnell, prospered as the family’s shipping company developed deeper business ties in China. Along the way, one of the company’s boosters was Ms. Chao, who now oversees efforts to promote America’s own maritime industry, which is in steep decline as China’s shipping sector rises in global dominance. Here are five takeaways.

Q: what is more than one Chao?

A: Chaos

McConnell married Chao, the daughter of shipping magnate James Si-Cheng Chao, in 1993. James Chao fled the civil war in China to arrive in Taiwan, and shortly thereafter immigrated to the United States, where he began his building an international shipping business.

The Chao family’s use of offshore structures came to light in 2014 when The Nation reported that the family business had routed ownership of its cargo ships through a series of opaque registrations in Liberia and the Marshall Islands. The Foremost Group fleet consists primarily of dry-bulk cargo ships carrying commodities, including coal, to ports around the world.

Russia Blacklist

#762, Chao Patrick Ting Hsi Continued

Still nothing found on Patric. But have you guys ever heard of Bruce Wasserstein?

"Bruce Wasserstein died at the age of 61 in October 2009 after a short illness, the details of which are unknown. The billionaire investment banking mogul had a stellar career on Wall Street where he made his name as a corporate raider in the 1980s. He used some of the earnings to acquire New York Magazine."

I've never heard of him either. He married Angela Chao, who is the youngest sister of Elaine Chao (Turtle's wife and probable Chinese spy), shortly before he died in 2009. He was 61 she was 36.

Angela Chao is the youngest of six daughters born to immigrant Chinese parents. Angela also serves as President of The Foremost Foundation, a philanthropic organization. She graduated from Harvard University (1994) and majored in Economics. She finished school in 3 years. After graduating, she worked for Smith-Barney (now Citigroup) before starting Harvard Business School and graduating in 2001.She speaks Mandarin Chinese and English.

Angela Chao is currently the Chair and CEO of the multi-billion dollar shipping company owned by Angela and Elaine Chao's family, Formost Group.

I can't believe the weirdness of all these people. Angela Chao's current husband also seems like one creepy dude. Jim Breyer is his name.

She seems to be passed around in arranged marriages. But hey that's how life works in the world of billionaire spooks.
