The additives in Diesel now are anti wear agents designed to replace the Sulfur as a lubricant on the upper piston rings.
This is one the reasons Diesel is so expensive here. Also the reason we export a lot. There isn't a whole lot of "light-sweet" crude here and it's cheaper to export to where high sulfur content fuel can be burned than to remove it to make US grade diesel.
