The additives in Diesel now are anti wear agents designed to replace the Sulfur as a lubricant on the upper piston rings.

This is one the reasons Diesel is so expensive here. Also the reason we export a lot. There isn't a whole lot of "light-sweet" crude here and it's cheaper to export to where high sulfur content fuel can be burned than to remove it to make US grade diesel.

The technology isn't capable of working without post combustion injections of fuel into the exhaust stream. Somewhere around 10% of what a modern diesel engine burns is used to burn the NOX, "unburned hydrocarbons" and CO2 in the Cat. There isn't enough "unburned hydrocarbons" in the exhaust so we have to add enough to make the process work.

Yep. I was a Heavy Equipment Mechanic when they were implementing the Tier system on off highway engines.

Got out of the industry for this very reason. I became a fucking muffler mechanic. Better than 3/4 of the calls I went out on were emissions related. Haul trucks shut down in the middle of pits because the NOX sensor at the end of the whole thing detected too much emissions for a second or two and started the EPA mandated 4 hour engine shut down sequence.

Absolute horseshit.

I hated my job so much when they started that shit.
