Attorney for Paul Pelosi Issues Statement on DUI Arrest of Husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi

The attorney for Paul Pelosi, 82, the husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) who was arrested Saturday night for DUI in Napa, California, after a car crash, issued a statement on the arrest Monday evening. The statement, posted to Twitter by Fox News reporter Chad Pergram, disputes some aspects of reports about events surrounding the arrest but does not address the DUI charge.

Statement from Atty for Paul Pelosi: Several news reports about Saturday night’s traffic incident involving Paul Pelosi have included incorrect information. Mr. Pelosi was attending a dinner party at the home of friends near Oakville. He left that party at 10:15 PM Saturday, to drive to his home a short distance away. He was alone in his car. After stopping at the intersection of Walnut Drive and Highway 29, and proceeding across Highway 29 to Oakville Cross Road, his car was hit on the back fender by a Jeep heading southbound on Highway 29. Mr. Pelosi was fully cooperative with California Highway Patrol officers who arrived a few minutes later.

A prior driving offense erroneously attributed to Mr. Pelosi is untrue and likely refers to another person with the same name. This error must be corrected.

There are also incorrect reports that misstate the timing of events. Mr. Pelosi left the dinner party at 10:15 PM Saturday. The incident happened a few minutes later. CHP and Napa County processing took until 7:30 AM Sunday.

Pelosi is charged with two misdemeanors, one count of driving under the influence and one count of driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher, and was given $5000 bail.

Nancy Pelosi’s spokesman Drew Hammill issued a statement Sunday on the arrest, noting that she was on the other side of the country.

“The Speaker will not be commenting on this private matter which occurred while she was on the East Coast.”

Kremlin Makes Announcement Amid Rumors On Putin’s Health

Christopher Steele, the former UK spy and reputed author of the infamous and discredited “Steele dossier,”told Sky News earlier this month he believes Putin is “seriously ill” and claimed that factored into the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov issued a response to the reports, saying that Putin “makes public appearances on a daily basis.”

“You can see him on TV screens, read, and listen to his speeches. I don’t think that a sane person can suspect any signs of an illness or ailment in this man,” he added. “I’ll leave it on the conscience of those who disseminate such rumors despite daily opportunities for everyone to see how he and others look like.”

EU Fails to Agree on Russian Oil Ban

European Union leaders struggled Monday to agree to impose an oil embargo on Russia, as Ukraine’s president urged them to set aside their differences and endorse a long-delayed package of sanctions aimed at piling more economic pressure on Moscow to halt the war.

The EU has already imposed five rounds of sanctions on Russia over its war. It’s targeted more than 1,000 people, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and top government officials, as well as pro-Kremlin oligarchs, banks, the coal sector, and more.

But a sixth package of measures, announced on May 4, has been held up by concerns over oil supplies. The EU gets about 40 percent of its natural gas and 25 percent of its oil from Russia.

Addressing the EU leaders Monday by video-link in a 10-minute message, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged them to end “internal arguments that only prompt Russia to put more and more pressure on the whole of Europe.”

He said the sanctions package must “be agreed on, it needs to be effective, including (on) oil,” so that Moscow “feels the price for what it is doing against Ukraine” and the rest of Europe. Only then, Zelenskyy said, will Russia be forced to “start seeking peace.”

Turkey makes proposal for Russia-Ukraine talks

United Nations representatives could potentially partake in the negotiations as well as Moscow and Kiev, the Turkish leader has suggested

Turkey is ready to host a new round of negotiations between Kiev and Moscow in Istanbul, the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday. He made the offer to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a phone call.

The peace process had appeared to be making some headway before talks broke down, last month.

“President Erdogan stated Turkey’s readiness, if agreed upon in principle by both parties, to meet with Russia, Ukraine and the United Nations in Istanbul, and to assume a role in a possible observation mechanism,” the presidency’s directorate of communications said in a statement.

Erdogan noted “the need for steps that would minimize the negative effects of the war and build trust by restoring as soon as possible the ground for peace between Russia and Ukraine,” it added.

Moscow has not yet commented on the Turkish proposal, with the Kremlin readout of the talks not mentioning it at all. According to the press release, the Ukraine part of the Putin-Erdogan phone call largely revolved around the safety of seafaring in the Black and Azov seas, as well as demining.

Vladimir Putin underlined the readiness of the Russian side to facilitate the unhindered maritime transit of goods in coordination with Turkish partners. This also applies to the export of grain from Ukrainian ports,” it said.

Turkey has taken an explicitly neutral stance in the ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine that broke out in late February. Ankara has maintained ties with both sides, abstaining from joining Western sanctions against Moscow and striving to assume the role of a mediator in the conflict.

In late March, Turkey hosted high-profile Russia-Ukraine talks that ultimately failed to yield any breakthrough, despite both parties signaling certain progress. Since then, the negotiations process has stalled, with Kiev and Moscow trading blame for the lack of progress.

Russia attacked the neighboring state following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered protocols were designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.

The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.
