Optical effect/illusion due to modern square "pixels" on the imaging chip which create a sort of interference effect when imaging subjects with closely spaced parallel lines.
Older film emulsions used randomly shaped and spaced silver particles to form images so this effect was not seen then.
Adds to the allure when they're shaking their money-makers.
