Firefighters battle three alarm fire at chemical company near downtown Omaha
Smoke was visible for miles Monday night as firefighters battled flames near downtown Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. —
Residents just southwest of downtown Omaha were encouraged to evacuate as fire raged through a chemical production company near 20th and Center Monday night.
Thick, black smoke billowed from the Nox Crete facility, and Omaha firefighters battled the fire all night.
Battalion Chief Scott Fitzpatrick said as of 7:45 a.m. there's no danger at this time for residents from the smoke coming from the fire.
An alert just before 9 p.m. urged the evacuation of those between 13th and 20th, Leavenworth to Martha. Those living nearby were initially encouraged to shelter in place. Those who could not evacuate were urged to stay inside with the windows closed.
The Columbus Community Center was opened at 1523 South 24th for evacuees who needed a place to stay.
That center closed at some point Monday night into Tuesday morning. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, the battalion chief at the scene was not aware of any active evacuation advisories.
The 13th Street Little Bohemia district shut down.
The first call for help came at 6:53 p.m., according to Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick said firefighters first struggled to access the fire, then realized it was bigger than they thought. Fire crews pulled back, knowing there were chemicals and large propane bottles on site.
Explosions could be seen between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. as part of the building collapsed and ruptured the propane containers. Fitzpatrick said projectiles were flying 50 feet in the air.
OFD estimated around 50 firefighters were on site with aerial units pouring water on the site.
By 11:30 p.m., firefighters were still battling the flames but had downsized the response to two alarms.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is under investigation.
"Our Omaha Fire Department has done a tremendous job at the 3-alarm fire at the Nox-Crete plant. Over the last 15 hours up to 75 firefighters have been on the scene. We are grateful no one has been injured and actions to protect the surrounding neighborhoods were successful. Thank you OFD!" Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said in a statement addressing the fire.
Nox Crete manufactures a variety of products, including form coating and deactivator, liquid floor hardeners, joint fillers, curing and sealing compounds and water repellents according to its website.
Pottawattamie County Emergency Management advised the smoke posed no toxicity risks for residents in Council Bluffs. OFD had advised that protective measures extended east only to 13th Street in Omaha.
As of 10:30 p.m., OPPD reported 2,476 customers were without electricity in the neighborhoods near the fire scene at 20th & Center. By 6 a.m., most of those outages had been restored.
As of 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, no civilian or firefighter injuries have been reported. Crews were fighting hot spots from the fire. The focus for day two will be putting out hot spots in one building and investigating the cause of the fire, according to Fitzpatrick.
At 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, the Douglas County Health Department reported the poison center has been contacted by one person with indirect exposure experiencing dizziness.
