The problem with this line of thinking is that it will be shattered when it starts becoming real for you, anon. Bad things happen in the world and most people don't watch the news. We are a rare bunch who deal in information all the time.
Did you think the pain would be for them?
Do you think that comfortable people will be motivated to get up and make necessary changes? Do people change their entire world views because of a few news reports?
It would be nice if that was the case, but world views are rarely broken by simple nightly news reports. They are shattered by the experienced failure of expectations.
Before people are willing to address their broken nation, they, themselves, must be broken. It had to be this way.
