Damage Control: Harvey Weinstein Adviser in Line To Become White House Chief of Staff

Post-midterm shakeup likely as Biden's presidency flounders

Anita Dunn, the senior Biden aide best known for providing "damage control" advice to disgraced Hollywood rapist Harvey Weinstein, is in line to take over as White House chief of staff after the midterm elections, NBC News reports.

Dunn is widely considered to be a "potential successor" to Ron Klain, the current White House chief of staff who several people close to Biden told NBC News was planning to "depart at some point after the midterms." A longtime public relations guru whose firm, SKDK, has represented an array of corporate clients seeking relief from the anti-business policies Democrats routinely enact when they hold power, Dunn played a leading role in Biden's presidential campaign and served several months as White House communications adviser.

Earlier this year, Dunn secretly rejoined the White House as a "special government employee" to help Biden prepare for his State of the Union address and overhaul the administration's bumbling response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The move raised concern among ethics experts, who noted that the temporary nature of the assignment exempted Dunn from most White House ethics requirements. For example, she did not have to file a public financial disclosure that would have revealed information about her SKDK clients and how much they were paying for her strategic advice.

"This is a person who is appointed in and out of alternating roles, between being a public official with significant influence over administration policy and a private adviser, creating the appearance of being an influence peddler," Walter Shaub, former director of the Office of Government Ethics, told the Washington Post in March.

At the time Dunn was one of at least nine former SKDK employees working in the Biden administration. Now she is one of at least nine of the firm's existing employees who previously served in the federal government. During the 2020 campaign, Biden promised to restore decency to the White House and put an end to the self-dealing and lobbyist influence that, in his view, ran rampant during the Donald Trump administration.

If Dunn ultimately does end up replacing Klain as White House chief of staff, the ethics experts will continue to express concern, but the administration is unlikely to care. NBC News writes that Biden views his former adviser as a "confidant whom he often turns to when his fortunes look bleak." And his fortunes certainly look bleak. Another person mentioned as a possible successor to Klain was Steve Ricchetti. The longtime Biden adviser is the brother of Jeff Ricchetti, an influential lobbyist whose firm, Ricchetti Inc., has experienced an influx of business since Biden took office. Imagine that!

Dunn's reputation as the Democratic Party's foremost crisis communications expert is presumably what prompted Weinstein to contact her for "damage control advice" in 2017 as the New York Times was preparing to publish a story exposing his history of sexual misconduct. According to a statement released by her firm, Dunn had been "asked to speak with [Weinstein] by a friend," and was not paid for her advice. She was presumably familiar with Weinstein, who had donated nearly $600,000 to Democratic candidates and committees since the early 2000s.

In addition to advising the Hollywood rapist, Dunn is best known for expressing admiration for the political philosophy of Mao Zedong, the founder of Chinese communism whose brutal regime was responsible for the deaths of at least 65 million people.

Buffalo shooter may have had assistance, victims' lawyer says

Authorities probing whether retired federal agent, others knew of mass shooting in advance

The suspect shooter in a mass-killing earlier this month in a Buffalo, New York, supermarket, may have had assistance, a victims' attorney said Tuesday.

Ten people were fatally shot in the racially motivated, May 14 attack.

"Based upon our deep dive into the digital background of the shooter, we have uncovered others tied to the shooter who may have encouraged or even assisted him," attorney Terrence M. Connors, whose is representing several families who lost a loved one, told Just the News.

While Connors wouldn't elaborate, his comments came a few days after the Buffalo News reported that authorities are investigating whether a retired federal agent had advanced notice of the mass shooting.

"As outrageous as this may sound, based upon what we are finding in our investigation, it is not surprising," Connors had told the Buffalo News.

Authorities think the former agent – believed to be from Texas – was one of at least six people who regularly communicated with accused gunman Payton Gendron in an online chat room in which racist hatred was discussed.

These individuals were invited by Gendron to read about his mass shooting plans and the target location about 30 minutes before he opened fire at Tops Markets killing 10 and wounded three others, law enforcement sources told the outlet.

That information appears to confirm a New York Times report from two weeks ago saying Gendron invited a small group of people to join an online chat room on the messaging platform Discord to review his plans about 30 minutes before the massacre.

Two days later, the Washington Post reported that 15 people accepted Gendron's invitation and were able to review his plan, read his racist writings and watch a live stream video of the shooting. It's unclear whether the retired agent accepted the invitation.

Just the News reached out to the FBI, which declined to comment for this story.

Gendron was an apparent white supremacist. All 10 people who died in the shooting were black.

Federal authorities are investigating whether the retired agent provided information to Gendron before the shooting.

They're also trying to determine the identify of an individual Gendron in his online diary called "Sandman," who according to Gendron's writings educated him on AR-15 semi-automatic rifles.

Police have said the shooter used a Bushmaster X-15, a version of the AR-15 rifle.

It appears no one who had advanced notice of the killings notified law enforcement. The FBI is reportedly tracking down the six people, including the retired agent, said to be in regular contact with Gendron and attempting to determine if any of them should be charged as accomplices.

Volkswagen accused of 'slavery' practices under Brazil dictatorship

Germany's Volkswagen Group faces accusations of "slavery" practices in Brazil during the South American country's military dictatorship in the 1970s and 80s, German media said on Sunday (May 29).

Volkswagen has been summoned to appear before a labour court in Brasilia on June 14, following a notification sent by the local judiciary on May 19, ARD public television and the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily reported.

A VW spokesman told AFP it was taking the matter "very seriously".

However, the world's second-largest carmaker did not want to say more at this stage "due to possible legal proceedings".

The case covers the period from 1974 to 1986, when the dictatorship was in full flow to just after it ended. The military reigned in Brazil between 1964 and 1985.

Former VW employees have been seeking compensation for several years.

According to the reports, the Brazilian judiciary is examining complaints that allege the car manufacturer used "slavery-like practices" and "human trafficking", and accuse the group of having been complicit in "systematic human rights violations".

At the time, the German group had planned to build a large agricultural site on the edge of the Amazon basin for the meat trade.

Hundreds of day labourers and temporary workers were recruited for deforestation work on 70,000 ha via intermediaries, but probably with the consent of the manufacturer's management, German media reported.

'Modern slavery'

The outlets consulted over 2,000 pages of testimonies and police reports.

According to the German reports, the workers were sometimes subjected to abuse and violence by intermediaries and armed guards.

There are also claims of mistreatment of workers who tried to escape and even suspicious disappearances.
