Kosovo: New Charges re: Four High-Profile Wartime Guerrilla Leaders

These crimes were recently added to an existing indictment charging four high-profile wartime guerrilla leaders with war crimes and crimes against humanity. They include the former political director of the KLA, Hashim Thaci, who later became Kosovo’s president, as well as Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi.

They accuse Thaci and the other former high-ranking KLA officers of being responsible for nearly 100 murders in the course of their guerrilla uprising against Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic’s army, police and paramilitary forces during the 1998-99 war.

Just over two decades ago, Kosovo’s bloody civil war against the Christians and the Christian Serbs’ tough response prompted Congressman Engel to persuade Ms. Albright and Mr. Clinton to use American force to defeat the Christian side. Mr. Clinton used NATO as a fig leaf to run a bombing campaign affectionately called “Madeleine’s War” supposedly to stop the bloodshed.

An Islamist insurgency, the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), ran guerrilla operations on the ground to shape the new rebel government.

Many U.S. officials at the time considered the KLA as an Islamist terrorist group, but Mr. Engel wasn’t perturbed. He used his seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to sponsor legislation to fund the KLA.

Clinton Foundation’s Ties To Suspected Human Organ Trafficker

The Clinton Foundation invited the prime minister of Kosovo to the 2011 Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting knowing full well that he had been implicated in a human organ trafficking scheme as leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army in the late 1990s.

Thaci and his Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) were first accused of human organ trafficking in 2010 in a report from the Council of Europe.

The 27-page report alleged that Thaci ran a “mafia-like” group of Albanian nationals — dubbed the “Drenica group” — who smuggled heroin and human organs in order to help finance the Kosovo Liberation Army’s fight against Yugoslav and Serbian forces in the 1998-99 Kosovo War.

Thaci and his government have another Clinton connection. In 2012, the Republic of Kosovo signed a $50,000-a-month lobbying contract with The Podesta Group, a lobbying firm co-founded by brothers John and Tony Podesta.
