Live bait. Give the big fish something they cannot refuse. With a hidden hook
-
Fresh Dead bait. Give them something that is too easy to pass up. With a hidden hook.
-
Trolling is fun. It's all about creating an illusion to trick this fish with an assortment of live bait, dead bait, or lures.
-
Chum. Work them into a frenzy feeding them free food, and when their guard is down, slip in a piece with a hidden hook.
-
Bait and switch…usually by trolling. You tease them with a big hookless lure and piss them off. You tease them closer to the boat, quickly yank the teaser and toss a small hooked bait that they glom in their fury.
-
Artificial lure. Looks like a fish, swims like a fish, acts like a fish. Hooks visible. They attack out of instinct.
-
Or you can use a purse seine and round up all the big fish. They think they are free until it's too late. They panic with nowhere to go and are all hauled in at once. Flopping on deck like a bunch of Hillarys.
-
Harpoon. Just chuck it and stick em, then haul em in. Many work with a spotter plane to track the prey and direct the harpoon thrower.
-
Be ready to travel. Know where the big fish are, when they are there, and why. You will never catch a big fish if you are not in the right spot.
-
Share info with your team. Current, local knowledge is important. Absolute tight lips around those not on your team.
-
Watch the water. Read the signs and be ready to react in a moments notice.
-
Make sure your gear is in pristine working order so you don't lose them.
-
Patience. Hours of boredom interlaced with moments of controlled chaos.
