Ford CEO wants EV sales to be ‘100%’ online

Ford head Jim Farley said the brand’s electric vehicles may shift tofixed prices and completely online sales. In a speech today at an IBM conference, Farley described a future where Ford dealerships would no longer stock inventory but serve as customer service centers for picking up online orders or repairing existing vehicles — with buyers also having the option for home delivery. In this hypothetical scheme,eliminating car dealershipswould put an end to haggling with salespeople.
“We got to go to non-negotiated price," said Farley. Naturally, he also used his speech to throw some jabs at competitors. "I believe some Mach-E and Lightning customers would love to have a Mustang for the weekend. Maybe they want a Super Duty. I can do that," Farley said, "They can't."
The company announced plans this year to be the top EV car maker in the world, hoping to beat out Tesla and other companies with strong EV brands such as BMW, Nissan and Kia. Farley said Ford aims to have the capacity to produce 600,000 EVs by 2023, a notably smaller figure than the 936,000 deliveries that Tesla made last year.
The CEO said he believes that prices for EVs will lower to an average of $25,000, as the cost of batteries and distribution gets cheaper.

It threatens the legitimacy of reproductive rights movements
These movements call for reproductive rights for people who may want to avoid pregnancy or who might want to terminate a pregnancy. These movements are linked to activism over bodily autonomy, calling for young people – especially girls – not to be forcibly married as children (who cannot provide consent), or coerced into sexual relationships. Not only are these rights enshrined in the International Declaration of Human Rights and have been hard-won in many countries, but in many parts of the world, these rights are still being fought for, sometimes at the cost of human lives.
There is an argument from a human rights perspective for the freedom from harm caused by others, an equivalent argument for why it is illegal to drink and drive.

Free-riding or relying on others to get vaccinated is unfair
Ensuring that as many people get vaccinated as possible – to try and reach herd immunity – is essential in reducing cases and deaths, stopping the spread of the virus, and providing protection to immunocompromised people who cannot get the vaccine and rely on others getting vaccinated to stop the spread of disease. In addition, there are millions of people in low- and middle-income countries who want to be vaccinated but don’t yet have access. People may not want to be vaccinated for fear of side effects or believe that because they are young and healthy they are not at risk, reassured that others around them are. But the concept of doing something for the collective good breaks down if people start to make decisions based only on their individual beliefs.

‘My body, my choice’ is an activist rallying call referring to individual health choices, centring on the bodily autonomy of the person. These choices (with the exception of abortion that could affect the emotional well-being of the other potential parent) don’t affect anyone else. In the midst of a pandemic that has killed 4.5 million people so far, choosing not to be vaccinated against COVID-19 when you have safe and effective vaccines available clearly has major implications for the health of others, especially vulnerable people who may not be able to get the vaccine themselves. Personal choice of vaccination sentiments can spread to other public health measures
The idea of centring personal choice at the heart of a decision to get vaccinated is problematic because it can be used to extend out to other public health measures such as masks or treatments. Some countries have now controversially made masks a matter of public choice, even in unventilated indoor spaces, which is contrary to scientific guidance on the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. As with vaccines, using masks not only protects the individual from getting infected, it reduces the risk of that person transmitting the virus to others.

The choice is not necessarily informed
Scientists and regulatory bodies who assess whether or not a vaccine is safe require enormous amounts of expertise and need to review vast amounts of data to make that decision. Most people, even those who are scientifically literate, don’t have the capacity for that level of assessment, which is why we have regulatory bodies and many levels of checks and balances before a vaccine can be rolled out to the general public. This doesn’t only apply to vaccines of course, but to any medicine or medical intervention, and beyond medicine to the motor vehicle or food and drink industries. Thus, holding back on vaccination to monitor side effects in other people – a wait and see approach – would only work if people waited for years before getting vaccinated against COVID-19, and even then only if they gathered data from studies around the world. People do have the right to be informed of potential risks before they take a vaccine, but this information can be provided by their health worker. Also, now that more than two billion people have been vaccinated, we have data on even the rarest side effects, of which there are very few. Even with breakthrough infections and new variants, all the evidence so far points to the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. Getting vaccinated is still the best way to protect yourself and the people around you.

Since mid-May, real-time indicators warned the labor market had hit a brick wall. Piper Sandler predicted last week that up to a million layoffs or more were ahead as the US economy is on the verge of recession.
The latest sign of an impending job market shock is an email seen by Reuters from the world's richest man, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who told executives the electric carmaker needs to cut staff by 10% because he has a "super bad feeling" about where the economy was headed.
The email, titled "pause all hiring worldwide," was sent to executives on Thursday and is the latest sign of mounting macroeconomic headwinds as lower-than-expected US new car sales in May could be a harbinger of a recession.
In an another email Tuesday, Musk told employees:
"Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week … If you don't show up, we will assume you have resigned."
On Wednesday, Musk tweeted: "Recessions serve a vital economic cleansing function."
Tesla, which has EV factories worldwide, including ones in the US, Berlin, and China, employs about 100k staff, so reducing 10% of jobs could equate to 10k people.
Musk's stark warning of impending economic doom and the need for job cuts sent Tesla shares down nearly 4% in premarket, dragging down Nasdaq 100 futures about half a percentage point and other electric carmakers.
"I think it's very prudent by Tesla to reduce the staff … This market is not rewarding high revenue growth at all costs. You're being rewarded from improvement in return on investor capital and free cash flow generation," Peter Garnry, head of the equity strategy at Saxo Bank A/S, told Bloomberg Television.
Garnry is right. Piper Sandler recently compiled a list and showed the recent company mass layoff announcements are mostly with tech unicorns.

DHS and Intel Community Media Outlets Proactively Move to Defend Dominion Voting Systems Ahead of Report on Electronic Election Hardware Issues Coming This Week
The timing is not coincidental. A 100-page report on electronic voting systems, by University of Michigan computer scientist J. Alex Halderman, remains under seal in a federal court in Atlanta as an outcome of election integrity lawsuits surrounding the Dominion voting system. That report is rumored to be released soon, perhaps as early as this week.
In what appears to be a proactive move to get out ahead of identified voting system irregularities specific to the electronic voting systems, the Dept of Homeland Security, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (DHS-CISA), updated the election page on their website [SEE HERE] under the “Rumor Control” section. DHS made the update on May 27, 2022, last week.
The very next day, May 28, 2022, The Washington Post produces an article [SEE HERE] describing an upcoming DHS-CISA 5-page memorandum that is in the process of being sent to the states ahead of a public release.
With the WaPo being the outlet of choice for the intelligence community & security state, it appears they received an advanced copy to help establish an early response effort.
Within The Post article, “there are nine flaws affecting versions of the machine called the Dominion Voting Systems Democracy Suite ImageCast X, according to a copy of an advisory prepared by CISA and obtained by The Washington Post.” The article then goes immediately to downplay the problems. “The flaws, many of which are highly technical and which mostly stem from machine design as opposed to coding errors, generally require an attacker to have physical access to the devices or other equipment used to manage the election, CISA said.”
[…] CISA’s five-page advisory is based in part on Halderman’s 100-page report, which remains under seal in a federal court in Atlanta. The advisory is expected to be released next week after officials in all 50 states are notified.

CNN then picks up the baton from the Washington Post, and they too tell their audience not to worry about any pesky evidence of election system vulnerabilities. The professionals in charge of things have assured us there’s no problems and everything is fine. After all, it would be far too difficult, and too many people would be involved, for there to be actual tampering and fraud in the use of the electronic systems.
(Via CNN) – Federal cybersecurity officials have verified there are software vulnerabilities in certain ballot-marking devices made by Dominion Voting Systems, discovered during a controversial Georgia court case, which could in theory allow a malicious actor to tamper with the devices, according to a draft analysis reviewed by CNN.
The vulnerabilities have never been exploited in an election and doing so would require physical access to voting equipment or other extraordinary criteria standard election security practices prevent, according to the analysis from the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
But because the subject is Dominion voting equipment, which has been the target of conspiracy theorists who falsely claim there was large-scale fraud in the 2020 election, federal and state and local officials are bracing for election deniers to try to weaponize news of the vulnerabilities ahead of midterm elections.
“While these vulnerabilities present risks that should be promptly mitigated, CISA has no evidence that these vulnerabilities have been exploited in any elections,” reads the draft CISA advisory, which the agency shared in a briefing with state and local officials on Friday. (read more)

Biden close to finalising deal to send refugees to SPAIN amid staggering migrant crisis
The President is prepared to conclude his deal with Spain that will resettle refugees from the US-Mexico border to ease pressure. Hundreds of thousands of migrants reach the border every month with the aim to enter the United States.
The deal with Spain comes at the same time that Canada has vowed to help America by taking in Haitian migrants who wish to work who have attempted the journey from Mexico.
Proposals are still in the discussion stages of negotiation, but it is understood that the plans may be announced at the Summit of the Americas next week.

The deal will also see a benefit for Spain which suffers from the highest rate of unemployment in the EU at 13.5 percent.

The US news website Axios said that internal planning documents reviewed by the company reveal that the initial number of refugees to be resettled in Spain will be “modest” but “symbolically important”.
They also say that the US is hoping Spain will commit to doubling or tripling the number of temporary workers it receives from Central America with an employment-based migration program.
It remains unclear if those who have been accepted by Spain for resettlement would have to apply at US embassies and consulates outside the US.

The Counter Signal was notified of the internal job postings, many of which come with an over six-figure price tag and are open to the Canadian Armed Forces, late last week after journalist Andy Lee was contacted by a follower possibly employed by Health Canada.
… Health Canada lists four levels for which they’re hiring.
Those at the highest level (EC-07) are expected to manage teams and have “experience with the operation of surveillance systems at the national level.” They should also have experience developing and maintaining national collaborative networks at the federal or provincial level on surveillance and be able to conduct quantitative epidemiologic data analysis.
Health Canada adds that “The conditions of employment for the opportunities include a “Secret” level security clearance and full vaccination against COVID-19 unless accommodated based on a medical, religious or other prohibited ground.”
… Now that the pandemic is essentially over, with cases dropping precipitously and travel restrictions around the world ending, it isn’t clear why Health Canada and the federal government feel it’s necessary to continue collecting Canadians’ health data for statistical analysis.
It could be that the government is anticipating a new viral outbreak in the near future. Or it could be that the government is preparing to launch a new COVID campaign to administer the up to 100 million COVID vaccines that Moderna’s new Quebec facility will begin producing as soon as 2024.
