Pilot killed as US fighter jet crashes
An F/A-18E Super Hornet went down on Friday in Southern California’s Mohave Desert
A US Navy fighter jet pilot was killed on Friday when his F/A-18E Super Hornet crashed in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, marking at least the fourth such incident in the area in recent years.
The jet, based at Naval Air Station Lemoore between Los Angeles and San Francisco, went down near the town of Trona in San Bernardino County at around 2:30pm on Friday, the Navy said in a statement. The pilot wasn’t identified, and the Navy offered no details about how the crash occurred. There were no injuries reported on the ground.
The incident occurred just a few hours after a Navy special forces sailor was killed and four others were injured when their van crashed on the way back from a training exercise at Camp Billy Machen in Niland, California. Two of the other injured sailors were listed in critical condition at nearby hospitals, the Navy said, without identifying any of the personnel involved. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The van reportedly veered off the highway before 10am, struck a boulder and overturned.

The fighter jet crash also follows a 2019 incident in which another Super Hornet went down, killing the pilot. That crash occurred in Death Valley National Park during a training mission. Seven park visitors were struck by debris and injured. The bystanders had gathered at a scenic overlook where military pilots are known to zip through an area nicknamed ‘Star Wars Canyon,’ in some cases flying below the rim like a spacecraft in the movie ‘Star Wars’.
There have been at least two other crashes in California involving Super Hornets in the past two years. A Super Hornet based at Naval Air Station China Lake went down last year at Death Valley National Park, and a Super Hornet from Naval Air Station Lemoore crashed in the Mojave Desert in 2020. In both of those cases, the pilots ejected and survived.
The F/A-18E Super Hornet, built by Boeing, is known as the Navy’s premier strike fighter and has a top speed of nearly 1,200 miles per hour. The $70 million jet is featured in the new ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ movie starring Tom Cruise.

Bees are fish, US court declares
Insects don’t qualify for California Endangered Species Act protection, so bumblebees are being reclassed
Four species of bumblebees have been reclassified as ‘fish’ in the state of California so that they can be protected under its Endangered Species Act, a court ruled on Tuesday, reversing a 2020 ruling and affirming that the term ‘fish’ shouldn’t be confined to merely ‘aquatic’ invertebrates under the law.
“We acknowledge the scope of the definition is ambiguous but also recognize we are not interpreting the definition on a blank slate,” the California Court of Appeal for the Third District declared in its ruling.
The four species of bumblebees are now protected by the California Fish and Game Commission as at-risk plants and animals, sheltering the insects from import, export, possession, purchase, or sale. The move is a blow to agricultural groups, in particular the Almond Alliance of California, which has lashed out against the ruling, arguing it would further financially burden growers of the crop who use pesticides known to harm bees.
Because insects are not a protected category under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA), the agency had to get creative. Candidates for CESA protection are limited to “a native species or subspecies of a bird, mammal, fish, amphibian, reptile, or plant” under California’s fish and game laws. While some species of insect are protected in the state, they fall under the federal Endangered Species Act.
The agency opted to split biological hairs in order to save the bees, noting the legal definition of fish – “a wild fish, mollusk, crustacean, invertebrate, amphibian, or part, spawn, or ovum of any of those animals” – includes invertebrates, which includes bumblebees.
While the trial court dismissed their claim, the appellate court countered that bees could in fact qualify as fish, because “although the term fish is colloquially and commonly understood to refer to aquatic species, the term of art employed by the Legislature in the definition of fish… is not so limited.”
The decision pointed out that a snail had previously been listed under CESA, noting that because such a terrestrial invertebrate “could have qualified as such only within the definition of fish,” the Commission’s authority was not limited to listing only aquatic invertebrates.
“Accordingly, a terrestrial invertebrate, like each of the four bumble bee species, may be listed as an endangered or threatened species under the Act,” the ruling stated. “The legislative history supports the liberal interpretation of the Act (the lens through which we are required to construe the Act) that the Commission may list any invertebrate as an endangered or threatened species.”
The newly-protected species include Crotch, Franklin, Suckley, and Western bumble bees. They are “highly endangered,” according to the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, whose spokeswoman, Sarina Jepsen, argued that classifying the critical pollinators as endangered is essential to their survival.
The California Endangered Species Act protects about 250 species of plant and animal. However, it doesn’t cover insects, theoretically leaving bumblebees in a legal no man’s land. Over the years, the definition of fish has slowly been expanded to include amphibians and later invertebrates in general, opening the door to the inclusion of bees.

Celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, endorsed by former President Donald Trump to fill Pennsylvania’s first open US Senate seat in 12 years, has won a nail-biter in the Republican primary. It came after his opponent conceded that a recount wouldn’t yield him enough votes to overcome a narrow defeat.
Oz had to wait nearly three weeks after Pennsylvania’s May 17 primary election to confirm his victory, as he led by just 972 votes, or 0.1%, a margin so slim that a recount was ordered. Second-place finisher Dave McCormick, a former hedge fund executive, called Oz on Friday to concede the race after concluding that he wouldn’t prevail in the recount.
“It’s now clear to me, with the recount largely complete, that we have a nominee,” McCormick told supporters on Friday night. “And today, I called Mehmet Oz to congratulate him on his victory. And I told him what I always said to you: that I will do my part to try to unite Republicans and Pennsylvanians behind his candidacy, behind his nomination for the Senate.”
Oz thanked McCormick for his pledge of support heading into the November general election against Democrat candidate John Fetterman, who is currently the state’s lieutenant governor. “We share the goal of a brighter future for Pennsylvania and America,” Oz said.
After previously appearing as a health expert on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show for five years, Oz got his own nationally syndicated daily show, in which he discussed the health concerns of his viewers, in 2009. The show ran for 13 seasons, ending only when the doctor gave it up to run for office.
Oz jumped into the race last November after Trump’s previous choice for the seat being vacated by retiring Republican Senator Pat Toomey dropped out. He has billed himself as an “America-first” conservative, saying he was compelled to run for Senate because “our system is broken.”
McCormick, who was reportedly paid $22 million last year as CEO of the world’s largest hedge fund, had attacked Oz as a “Hollywood liberal who is pro-abortion, anti-gun and anti-fracking.” On the campaign trail, Oz advocated for more hydraulic fracturing to boost US supplies of oil and natural gas.
The Ohio-born Oz, the son of Turkish immigrants, has dual citizenship and served in Turkey’s army during his college years. He has pledged to give up his Turkish citizenship if elected to the Senate.
Oz’s victory gave Trump an 8-0 record for the candidates he endorsed in Pennsylvania, including gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano.
