Mathematician and groundbreaking computer scientist Alan Turing took his own life today in 1954. Two years earlier Turing had been convicted under British laws criminalizing homosexuality, which caused him to lose his security clearance and be barred from continuing his cryptographic work. Later British governments would subsequently apologize for the prosecution, and pardon Turing. He appears on the UK £50 note.
