Everything Is a Weapon: The U.S. Government Is Waging Psychological Warfare on the Nation

“Have you ever wondered who’s pulling the strings? … Anything we touch is a weapon. We can deceive, persuade, change, influence, inspire. We come in many forms. We are everywhere.”— U.S. Army Psychological Operations recruitment video

The U.S. government is waging psychological warfare on the American people.

No, this is not a conspiracy theory.

Psychological warfare, according to the Rand Corporation, “involves the planned use of propaganda and other psychological operations to influence the opinions, emotions, attitudes, and behavior of opposition groups.”

For years now, the government has been bombarding the citizenry with propaganda campaigns and psychological operations aimed at keeping us compliant, easily controlled and supportive of the police state’s various efforts abroad and domestically.

The government is so confident in its Orwellian powers of manipulation that it’s taken to bragging about them. Just recently, for example, the U.S. Army’s 4th Psychological Operations Group, the branch of the military responsible for psychological warfare, released a recruiting video that touts its efforts to pull the strings, turn everything they touch into a weapon, be everywhere, deceive, persuade, change, influence, and inspire.

This is the danger that lurks in plain sight.

Of the many weapons in the government’s vast arsenal, psychological warfare may be the most devastating in terms of the long-term consequences.

As the military journal Task and Purpose explains, “Psychological warfare is all about influencing governments, people of power, and everyday citizens… PSYOP soldiers’ key missions are to influence ‘emotions, notices, reasoning, and behavior of foreign governments and citizens,’ ‘deliberately deceive’ enemy forces, advise governments, and provide communications for disaster relief and rescue efforts.”

Yet don’t be fooled into thinking these psyops (psychological operations) campaigns are only aimed at foreign enemies. The government has made clear in word and deed that “we the people” are domestic enemies to be targeted, tracked, manipulated, micromanaged, surveilled, viewed as suspects, and treated as if our fundamental rights are mere privileges that can be easily discarded.

Aided and abetted by technological advances and scientific experimentation, the government has been subjecting the American people to “apple-pie propaganda” for the better part of the last century.

Consider some of the ways in which the government continues to wage psychological warfare on a largely unsuspecting citizenry.

Former CSIRO executive Mark Wallis jailed for two years after defrauding government of $300,000

A former senior officer from the CSIRO has been sentenced to two years in jail for fraud, after he spent more than $300,000 of the agency's money on items including a washing machine, a jet ski and two cars.

Key points:

The court heard Mark Wallis has since paid back all of the money, although the cars were confiscated

Chief Justice Lucy McCallum recognised his depression, but said that did not excuse the crime

Wallis will spend 12 months behind bars, with a further 12 months on a good behaviour order

Mark Wallis, 47, was about to sign a redundancy package in 2017 when the fraud was uncovered.

At first, he denied the crime, saying others had used his work credit card.

But he then quickly admitted the offence and later pleaded guilty to three charges.

Chief Justice Lucy McCallum described the purchases as ranging between the "banal" and "luxurious".

She said Wallis was drawing a wage of more than $250,000 at the time of the offences, when he was head of purchasing and in charge of security.

Chief Justice McCallum acknowledged his good character before the theft, but said that had allowed him to take a position of trust, creating an opportunity for him to be the author of a significant fraud.

She told the court the most serious crime was having invoices for two cars created in a form that would ensure the organisation would pay for them.

The court heard Wallis had since paid back all of the money, although the cars had been confiscated, and the reparation was only made after a letter of demand.

Court hears offending 'involved considerable planning'

Evidence was given to the court about how Wallis had changed into a different person after a car accident in 2010.

Chief Justice McCallum also recognised his depression.

But she said that did not excuse the crime.

"The offending involved considerable planning and must have involved a level of executive function," she said.

"I am satisfied the offences were committed deliberately and with full [knowledge] they were dishonest."

The sentence had been set down for last month, but was delayed after an outbreak of COVID-19 in Canberra's jail.

Wallis said he was at greater risk from the virus because of medication which makes him immunocompromised.

But today the court received a report from the jail outlining how such the situation could be managed.

Wallis will spend 12 months behind bars, with a further 12 months on a good behaviour order.

US Senate panel approves NATO expansion

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously backed Finland and Sweden’s bids to join the military alliance

The Senate committee passed the resolution on Thursday without a single voiced objection, indicating bipartisan support for the move in Washington, and urged other NATO members to follow suit and show unity in welcoming Stockholm and Helsinki into the US-led military bloc.

“A powerful alliance rooted in shared values, Sweden and Finland would only strengthen NATO and revitalize the backbone of our international security architecture in the face of Putin’s aggression,” the committee chairman, Senator Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) said following the vote, referring to the Russian president. He added that with this “bipartisan vote of confidence, we signal that we stand ready to take the necessary steps to facilitate their accession.”

“I’ve long said that Sweden’s and Finland’s strong political and military traditions make them a perfect fit for the alliance. I hope the Senate will follow the committee’s lead and move quickly to pass this resolution,” added Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), the committee's ranking member.

The two Nordic countries' membership applications enjoy full support from the Joe Biden administration and are expected to easily surpass the required two-thirds minimum for full Senate approval. For his part, Biden called on the upper chamber to ratify the measure “as quickly as possible.”

However, a consensus from all NATO states is needed to add new nations to the alliance, and the two new hopefuls are facing vocal pushback from a major member, Turkey. After repeatedly blasting Finland and Sweden as “guesthouses for terrorist organizations,” Ankara reportedly presented them with a list of 10 requirements they must meet to secure its blessing.

Longtime neutral countries, Finland and Sweden have scrambled to join NATO amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Russia attacked its neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered protocols were designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state. The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join NATO.

Regarding Sweden and Finland’s entry into the alliance, Moscow called the move a “serious mistake with long-lasting ramifications.” Still, the Kremlin views the two countries’ NATO aspirations as less concerning than those of Ukraine, where potential territorial disputes “would have carried huge risks for the entire continent.”
