Larry Summers Blames ‘Banana Republicans,’ January 6 for Inflation

Pam Key12 Jun 2022

During Sunday’s broadcast of CNN’s “State of the Union,” former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers said that “banana Republicans” and the events of January 6, 2021 had contributed to the inflation underway in the U.S. economy.

Summers said, “We should focus on what’s important, not raising input prices for American producers, so they’re less competitive, which is what much of those tariffs do. Instead, we should be focusing on things that allow the leakage of key technologies to China and the like. We should pass at long last some kind of legislation, ideally, on a bipartisan basis that would raise the vastly excessive Trump tax cuts, join the world in taxing corporations, take down prescription drug prices. All of that would operate to reduce inflation. There are things we can do.”

Summers added, “If I can step out of my area for one second. I think the bananaRepublicans who are saying that what happened on January 6 was nothing or OKare undermining the basic credibility of our country’s institutions.

That, in turn, feeds through for inflationbecause if you can’t trust the country’s government, why should you trust its money? So, I think it’s terribly important that we take the temperature down in Washington. That we recognize behavior that’s just out of bounds of reasonable and decency, we give the Fed the room it needs. We bring down the budget deficit. We take down prices directly through prescription drugs. This is a challenge that we can meet. If we’re prepared to be serious about taking it on.”

'Out of touch' Dems ignoring America's struggles to assuage Trump obsession, Stefanik says

"They're missing a huge chance' to address inflation, gas prices, and crime by obsessing over Jan. 6, No. 3 House Republican says of Democrats.

The No. 3 House Republican says Democrats are so obsessed with using the Jan. 6 investigation to settle scores with former President Donald Trump that they are "missing a huge chance" to address the crime, inflation, drug scourge and supply chain shortages that most trouble Americans.

"I think this is theDemocrats, you know, really desperate attempt to try to change the narrative away from all these crises that the American peopleknow their policies have created, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N..Y, told the Just the News, Not Noise television show on Friday night.

Stefanik, the House Republican Conference chairwoman, said the Democrats' first prime-time hearing on the Jan. 6 riots Thursday night was an "abject failure" and a "partisan political circus" that signaled to America they'd rather obsess over Trump than tackle the country's most pressing needs like soaring gas and food prices and the fentanyl crisis that is the single leading cause of death of adults between 18 and 45.

"They're missing a huge chance," she said in a wide-ranging interview. "Wouldn't that be nice to have a primetime hearing on any of those crises? That's what the American people are yearning for. …. That's how out of touch Democrats are with what's actually happening across this country."

Stefanik said Republicans won't let the Jan. 6 hearings distract them from staying focused on the issues of the present, saying they have created a comprehensive agenda for the fall election modeled after Newt Gingrich's famous 1994 Contract with America.

"You will see our Commitment with America that House Republicans have been hard at work writing," she said. "We will be unveiling that in the coming weeks. And this is really important. We're going to work hard to earn this majority, not only to hold Joe Biden accountable, but to put forth legislation on securing the border, on reining in inflation, reining in the reckless spending that's been happening, holding China accountable, standing up for parents and our role in the classroom on behalf of our children. So there's going to be a long list of policy to-do's and we will commit to delivering those results."

Stefanik, who also is playing a leading role recruiting top female candidates for GOP races nationwide, said Democrats are avoiding having a bipartisan discussion on how best to secure the Capitol and fix the flaws exposed by the Jan. 6 riots when a rag-tag, angry crowd overran a $600 million Capitol Police force.

"The purpose of the Jan. 6 committee with only Nancy Pelosi appointees is not to focus on how to make sure the Capitol is more secure," she said." And they're not focused on getting to the facts that led up to Jan. 6.What they are focused on is punishing their political opponents, smearing Donald Trump, smearing his voters and smearing Republican members of Congresswho have called out this committee as illegitimate which is factually correct."

Stefani said she doesn't believe the Capitol is any safer than it was on Jan. 5, 2021.

"I believe that they have not made improvements, and we see that with some of the bipartisan investigations into January 6. Nancy Pelosi has refused to act on many of those recommendations," she said. "And I don't want to fault the Capitol Police. The Capitol police do a tremendous job every single day. And we are grateful and I have a great working relationship as does my office with the US Capitol Police. What concerns me is the politicization by the Speaker's office when it comes to overseeing the sergeant at arms and how they interact with the Capitol Police."

Marjorie Taylor Greene: Childhood incident with school gunman shaped her Second Amendment stance

"The House of Representatives really is nothing but a House of hypocrisy," Greene says, referring to the gun control debate on the floor of the U.S. House, which is protected by officers with firearms

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Georgia Republican, says a gun incident from her childhood school years cemented her support for the Second Amendment today.

"It was one of the scariest days of my life, and it happened to be when Joe Biden turned America's schools into gun free school zones," Greene recalled during an interview this week with the Just the News, Not Noise television show. "It was in 1990. I was 16 years old, and one morning one of our schoolmates brought guns to school in a duffel bag on the school bus, saying it was like a school project, brought them into his first-period class and he took over our entire school with guns."

"And the reason why he was able to do that is we had no good guy with a gun in our school. Our principal, we didn't have a resource officer, we had no one," she added. And so all of our classes went on lockdown and the only thing we knew is that there was another student on the loose with guns and all of our lives were in danger. And that really, really set in to me and many of my friends that we learned a really very important lesson that day," she added.

Greene continued, saying, "You never want to be at the mercy of a madman with a gun. You always want to be able to protect yourself and protect others and that's what I walked away from my school that day knowing."

Greene said she's been "fighting really hard" against the Democrats' gun control legislation because she believes it won't make anyone safer.

"They actually keep everyone unsafe and most importantly, they keep our children unsafe in gun free school zones," she said, adding that she found "irony" in the gun control debate going on in the House chamber.

"Every single door has men or women armed with guns, the very same guns that they want to take away from Americans," she said. "And so I was telling everyone there, I was like, this is the biggest hypocrisy. The House of Representatives really is nothing but a House of hypocrisy."

The Democratic-led House passed gun control legislation on Wednesday that includes raising the age to purchase semi-automatic weapons to 21 nationally and banning the sale of large-capacity magazines.

Currently, federal law sets the age at 21 for the purchase of handguns, not semi-automatic weapons such as AR-15s. The bill faces an uphill climb in the 50-50 Senate.

Its time to shred the speech and debate clause that allows them to lie about everything

Rep. Scott Perry to Rep. Liz Cheney: Your pardon story 'is an absolute shameless, soulless lie'

"This is a kangaroo court. And it's more fitting to be aired with the filth of scripted reality TV than masquerading as a newsworthy item," Perry said

Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) blasted Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) for claiming he sought a presidential pardon because he thought he may have done something wrong on Jan. 6.

On the John Solomon Reports podcast Friday, when asked if he did anything wrong on Jan. 6, Perry said, "No, of course not. I was in the Capitol doing my legislative duties on January 6."

"[T]he notion that I ever sought a presidential pardon for myself, or other members of Congress, is an absolute shameless and soulless lie," he added. "It's just simply no surprise, considering this latest fabrications come from a sham committee using a breathtaking abuse of power to conjure up political theater to destroy their opponents and … distract the American people from the economic and national security nightmare. This is a nightmare created by their one-party rule and quite honestly, rogue Republicans — and you know, Republicans in name only — and their compatriots on the radical left.

"This is a kangaroo court. And it's more fitting to be aired with the filth of scripted reality TV than masquerading as a newsworthy item, which is why I'm using all my time as a member of Congress to try to address the fact that Americans can't literally afford gasoline, groceries, their food, and … to suffer under the policies of those who control the sham committee."

Perry asked where the primetime committee hearing was for the Afghanistan withdrawal debacle and the inflation, border, and drug crises.

"[T]hat's what I'm working on and that's exactly what the American people demand Congress work on, not producing political theater to the tune of $8 million to destroy their opponents."

During the Jan. 6 committee hearing aired on TV Thursday, Cheney said, "As you will see, Rep. Perry contacted the White House in the weeks after January 6th to seek a Presidential Pardon."

She added, "Multiple other Republican congressmen also sought presidential pardons for their roles in attempting to overturn the 2020 election."

Justice Barrett topped Supreme Court authors last year in book royalties, with $425,000

The first installment of Barrett's reportedly $2 million book deal is the largest advance any justice has been paid.

The justices who sit on the nation's highest court received a total $800,000 in book royalties last year, according to newly- released financial reports.

The most significant payment, in the amount of $425,000, went to Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett for her forthcoming book, according to the reports released Thursday. The payment is likely the first of several on a book deal she signed for a reported $2 million.

Previously, the largest book advances went to Justices Clarence Thomas and Sonia Sotomayor, who each were paid over $1 million for their books chronicling their rise from humble beginnings to the Supreme Court.

In total, Sotomayor has made about $3 million from various book deals, according to the Associated Press.

The eight justices have an annual salary of $274,000, and Chief Justice Roberts gets $286,700.

Previous reports indicate that Barrett's book may focus on the ways in which judges should not let personal feelings shape their decisions on the bench. Her contract is with Sentinel imprint, the conservative branch of Penguin Random House publishing.

Justice Neil Gorsuch received a quarter-of-a-million dollars in royalties from HarperCollins last year, for a yet-to-be-publish book. He previously made $650,000 for his 2019 book, "A Republic, If You Can Keep It." He also reported a $700 pair of cowboy boots as a gift he had been given by the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society.
