Learn Our History Today: On June 10, 1775, during a meeting of Congress in Philadelphia, John Adams proposed that the group of volunteers currently laying siege to the city of Boston be re-organized to form what would be known as the Continental Army. This ragtag group of men was mainly from the New England colonies and was armed with whatever they could find – from hunting rifles to vintage muskets left over from previous wars. Adams felt that in order to become a stronger, united army, troops from other colonies should be brought in.

In support of that, multiple companies of rifleman from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia were formed and promptly sent to join the new Continental Army. In addition, Adams suggested that George Washington, a Virginian and veteran of the French and Indian War, be appointed commander of the newly formed army. This move dumbfounded the other members of congress, who had thought that Adams would side with his homeland and ask for a Massachusetts man to command the army.
