But Trump wasn't through with Arrington, a career IT developer with defense industry ties. Arrington began working at the Pentagon in 2019 on appointment by former President Trump to head up the roll-out of a new program called the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC).

CMMC was designed to revamp cyber security protocols among defense industry partners of the DoD. It would require defense contractors to meet evolving DoD cyber security standards, but with the added step of peer reviewed certification by other contractors as a means of accountability.

Arrington worked on the CMMC project for over two years, trying to recruit defense contractors to embrace the change. But she was suddenly sidelined in May 2021 as damning allegations surfaced of possible impropriety.

According to a lawsuit filed by Arrington in November 2021, the DoD placed her on paid leave following an accusation by the National Security Agency (NSA) that she had committed a federal crime related to โ€œUnauthorized Disclosure of Classified Information.โ€

The NSA immediately revoked Arringtonโ€™s access to some top-level classified information, and the DoD followed suit by suspending all of Arrington's security clearances, as well.

But Arrington said in her lawsuit she got barely any further communication from DoD brass in the intervening months.

Specifically, Arrington says the DoD nor NSA provided proof of their allegations or any material details about the accusations, other than saying the info she leaked supposedly violated her Gamma-level โ€œTop Secretโ€ security clearance.
