Either his compass (a decent one too) is way off or you are correct and mag north is heading south.

Your car doesn't do mag north. It does True North. Big difference. Anon did maps and aviation stuff for a living for a bit. There are standard deviations for Mag vs. True. Depending on where you are.

True is where the Earth spins, Mag is where a compass points. Mag for all intents and purposes moves around the North pole but has never really been at true. Last time I looked {years ago) it was wandering around just south of the west horn of Greenland.
I need to dig out my old survey equipment and maps.
I've shot Artillery rounds into 55 gallon drums at 4 miles using this math. The "wobble" is negligible and step outside, away from all metal with a map, a compass and recon what direction North is pointing. Or do you not know how to figure out where you stand without a computer or smartphone?
