US reviews Israeli plans for strikes against Iranian targets in Syria

"Israel" secretly coordinates with the US on many of the airstrikes it conducts in Syria, according to current and former US officials.

What was the US role in Syria?

Behind the curtains, current and former officials say that for several years, many Israeli missions have been reviewed in advance for approval by senior officials at US Central Command and the Pentagon.

This means that the formal coordination was previously unknown, and the secrecy surrounding it demonstrates how Washington has sought to support its Israeli ally.

The US review, according to the WSJ, mainly focuses on Israeli missions in eastern Syria that pass close to the US occupation's Al-Tanf base.

The vast majority of those Israeli airstrikes were authorized by the United States, but the officials claim the US military does not assist "Israel" in selecting its targets. The US does not review all Israeli operations in Syria they claimed. It is a “well-developed and deliberate process,” one former US official said. This cannot but mean that the operations they choose to review are targeted and singled out.

In northeast Syria and in the vicinity of al-Tanf, the US mission is solely securing the enduring defeat of ISIS, working with our local partners,” a US defense official claimed. “We won’t discuss the details of the steps we take to reduce the risk to our forces and to the mission.”

US direct intervention

While the US has generally approved the strikes under review, current and former officials claim the US has occasionally asked "Israel" for changes.

The US urged "Israel" to pause its strikes at least twice in order to avoid complicating the battle space while the US military was engaged in "sensitive operations", they claimed.

However, US officials say that a portion of Israeli airstrikes don’t pass near Al-Tanf base and thus aren’t reviewed by the US, including the latest Israeli aggression on Damascus Airport.

As per the WSJ report, the US military also doesn’t review Israeli airstrikes in Iraq, which "Israel" hasn’t officially confirmed, but US officials say have occurred.

What is the US doing in Syria?

Besides being an occupation that backs armed groups for its own operations and agenda in the region, the US occupation forces continue to steal Syrian oil by smuggling it from their bases in Syria to their bases in Iraq.

Convoys of tens of vehicles, including tankers loaded with stolen oil from oil fields occupied by US forces in Syria, are frequently seen crossing toward northern Iraq, in addition to trucks loaded with military equipment.

The US interference in the crisis-stricken Middle Eastern country continues to be exposed, from occupation to military agenda and the theft of oil.

Indian police fire on crowd protesting army recruitment plan

An angry mob set fire to trains in India on Friday during protests against a new short-term military recruitment scheme that have erupted across the country.

Authorities are reeling from a sudden and violent backlash following the announcement this week of a plan to modernize India's 1.4 million-strong armed forces, which would deprive aspiring soldiers of benefits and job security.

Hundreds of protesters blocked passenger trains in Secunderabad's southern city, burning piles of debris and setting carriages on at least four trains on fire.

Officers fired live rounds to disperse the crowd, injuring at least one demonstrator, according to an AFP photographer on the scene. Telangana state police and officials could not be reached for comment.

Protests have erupted in several cities across the country since Thursday, with the eastern state of Bihar seeing the most violence.

Crowds have set fire to more than a dozen trains and attacked the deputy chief minister's home, as well as offices of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to senior police officer Sanjay Singh, more than 100 people have been arrested across Bihar.

"Video recordings are being made of protests," he added. "Protesters will be identified and action will be taken against them."

To prevent the unrest from spreading, authorities imposed a curfew in Gurgaon, a satellite city of New Delhi, and temporarily closed some metro stations in the capital.

'A careless government'

The "Agnipath" (Path of Fire) scheme aims to enlist young adults in the armed forces for four years, which is a significant departure from the past, as enlistment is traditionally viewed as a path to a lifetime job.

Only a quarter of the new recruits will be offered permanent positions in the army at the end of the program, missing out on benefits such as pensions enjoyed by current personnel.

The recruitment plan was claimed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to be aimed at modernizing India's armed forces with a younger and leaner soldier corps while also creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs.

Following the start of the protests, the government announced that the upper age limit for Agnipath applicants would be raised to broaden eligibility and compensate for recruitment disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

"The relaxation of age indicates that the government cares for our youth," Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said Friday.

Unemployment has long been a millstone around the neck of the Indian economy, with unemployment figures at their lowest since the 1970s, even before the Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on local commerce.

Boris Johnson in Kiev on second visit, pledges more arms for Ukraine

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson returned to Kiev on Friday for his second visit in less than two months, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who praised Britain's "resolute" support for Ukraine.

Zelensky wrote on Telegram that "many days of this war have proved that Great Britain's support for Ukraine is firm and resolute. Glad to see our country's great friend Boris Johnson in Kyiv again."

The British PM tweeted it was "good" to be in Kiev again.

"Many days of this war have proved that Great Britain's support for Ukraine is firm and resolute. Glad to see our country's great friend Boris Johnson in Kyiv again."

The visit comes roughly four months after the European Union's most prominent heads of state-backed Ukraine's ambition to be recognized as a candidate for EU membership.

France, Germany, Italy, and Romania all support Ukraine getting "immediate" formal candidate status to join the European Union, French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday in Kiev.

Ukraine applied for the EU membership on February 28, shortly after Russia launched its military operation. It was followed by Georgia and Moldova, which decided to fast-track submission of their applications and similarly received the EU questionnaire in mid-April.

Last month, EU executives had reviewed Ukraine's accession bid in record time; cutting the process from months to weeks. This cut was defended by the chief spokesperson of the European Commission, Eric Mamer.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned Ukraine against joining the European Union and NATO as Kiev aspired to obtain membership in both after the Ukraine war broke out.

More weapons for Ukraine

The PM also discussed arming Kiev with additional heavy weapons and air defense systems, according to the head of the Ukrainian presidential office Andriy Yermak.

On his Telegram channel, Yermak wrote how "today, together with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the [president’s] office and the government team met with our good friend and ally, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. We discussed with Boris the need to supply heavy weapons and air defense systems, economic support for Ukraine, increased sanctions pressure on Russia … as well as security guarantees for Ukraine and the need for Russia to compensate for the losses caused to our state."

Yesterday, Macron assured Zelensky that "Europe" is on his side, pledging 6 more Caesars to Kiev.

Turkish artillery targets Aleppo district in Syria

Turkish artillery targeted the center of the city of Tal Rifaat in the northern countryside of Aleppo as well as the village of Abyan in the Tel Rifaat Friday, leaving behind vast material damage.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based opposition center, stated that, on Thursday night, the Turkish forces targeted areas in the city of Tal Rifaat in the northern countryside of Aleppo, which includes a Russian military base. The shelling targeted the Kurdish forces’ deployment areas in the vicinity of Mara’ and Mara’anaz, north of Aleppo.

The SOHR stated that "the Sheikh Issa axis witnessed mutual targeting with medium and heavy machine guns, between the Kurdish forces on one side and the Turkish-backed factions on the other." Syrian border villages and towns are always subjected to artillery and missile bombardment by Turkish forces.

The town of Tal Rifaat, located 35 kilometers north of the Syrian city of Aleppo, is under threat of a Turkish invasion in a possible new military offensive, especially after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statements, on June 1, about the possibility of attacking the cities of Tal Rifaat and Manbij under the pretext of “protection” of the Turkish national security.

"A shameful act of aggression"

An official source in the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates asserted "Syria's right, under international law, to confront any measures taken by Erdogan’s regime and its terrorist organizations," urging "all illegal foreign forces to leave Syrian territory."

“Establishing a so-called safe zone on Syrian territory is a shameful act of aggression and part of Erdogan's policy of ethnic and geographical cleansing in the occupied Syrian territories, which amounts to a crime against humanity," it added.

Syria "holds responsible every party that illegally operates outside the framework of the Syrian state and its institutions," the source said.

TASS news agency reported on Thursday, quoting Russia's special envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, that Russia had tried to persuade Turkey to cancel plans for a military operation in Syria during talks in Kazakhstan.

"We tried to convince them that the matter should be resolved through peaceful means without resorting to violence because this could lead to an escalation," said Lavrentiev.

Moscow has spoken out against Turkey's operation in the Raqqa province, as the strategic M4 Highway passes through the area. Russia's criticism, alongside discussions between Ankara and Moscow, prompted Turkey to drop the preparations for an operation in the area, while Russia bolstered its military presence there, Turkish newspaper Hurriyet said.

Biden says briefed on US mercenaries 'missing' in Ukraine

President Joe Biden said Friday that he had been briefed on two Americans who had gone missing in Ukraine, and he urged Americans not to travel to the war-torn country.

When asked about the two American volunteer fighters who are believed to have been captured by Russian forces, Biden responded, "I have been briefed."

Biden told reporters that he didn't know where the men were, stressing that "Americans should not be going to Ukraine."

The US State Department urged Russia on Thursday to treat any Americans captured while fighting alongside Ukrainian troops as prisoners of war who ought to be treated humanely.

It also stated that a third American, in addition to the two military veterans who were reportedly captured by Russian forces in a pitched battle last week, was believed to be missing in Ukraine.

According to family members and members of Congress, Alexander Drueke and Andy Huynh, who were both living in Alabama, lost contact with their relatives while fighting alongside Ukrainian forces near the Russian border.

Third US fighter goes missing in Ukraine

Earlier today, following the announcement of two US citizens missing in Ukraine, presumably captured by Russian forces, State Department Spokesperson Ned Price stated that there are "reports of one additional American whose whereabouts are unknown."

On Thursday, Price spoke to the media and clarified that "unfortunately we don't know the full details of that case."

While CNN reported on the identity of the third missing American as being the US Marine veteran Grady Kurpasi, based on information collected from his wife, the US official did not validate the information.

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told the Solovyov Live show, when asked about the two captured US veterans in specific, “I do not have such information, and I have been checking it every day. I will check it today as well. We disclose to the public all information about the fate of arrested mercenaries or those on trial… I want to reiterate that I will double-check whether there is any additional information on this issue.”

US mercenaries in Ukraine

Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reported on March 6 that 3,000 US "volunteers" were to arrive in Ukraine, amid Russia's ongoing military operation in the country.

The agency quoted the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ press service via Telegram as saying that "the volunteers are ready to repel Russia as part of an international battalion."

Among the US volunteers are army veterans "with combat experience gained in Iraq and other hotspots around the world," the agency reported.
