The Pope, and the power of play

The Geis family swapped their dining room table for a ping-pong table, and ended up with a trip to the Vatican as a result.

Ominous clouds blanketed the skies, thunder clapped and a torrential downpour hailed down on St. Peter's Square on what had just minutes before been a sunny, 75-degree morning at the Vatican. 15-year-old Charlie Geis peered through the rain and locked eyes with Pope Francis.

"Oh. My. Gosh. I can't believe this is happening. From a summer internship in Chicago to sitting feet away from the Pope in Rome," said Charlie.

Let's rewind a few years to 2013 in suburban Chicago… Charlie and his two brothers were becoming increasingly consumed with playing games on their phones and tablets. To break this trend their dad, Doug Geis, bought a ping-pong table for the basement.

"I thought about a pool table as well, but it came down to ping-pong being so active and social in nature," said Doug, who works for U.S. Bank in Chicago. "It felt like a perfect fit for our family."

And it was. The table was a hit with the boys, who were spending hours-on-end volleying back and forth. Nearly immediately the middle Geis brother, William, asked for a better paddle for his birthday to gain an edge on his brothers and dad.

Doug took to Google for research and stumbled upon Killerspin, one of the world’s leading table tennis manufacturers. He called the company for advice, and they invited him down to their headquarters located on the 10th floor of a high-rise office building downtown Chicago.

"So I walk in, and I'm greeted with a 'This is the guy who called!' and tossed a Killerspin tee shirt," said Doug. He was given a tour of the Killerspin offices, picked out his gift for William with help from a "paddle guru," took an impromptu lesson from world-champion table tennis player Biba Golic and was introduced to Killerspin CEO and local entrepreneur Robert Blackwell, Jr.

Enamored with and inspired by the Geis family’s transformation, Blackwell pitched Doug with a wild idea: trading his living room table for a ping-pong table. He offered to give the family a professional-grade table and equipment in exchange for the opportunity to come out and shoot a video with the family for social media.

"We said 'Yes.' This was a chance to double down on our experiment to bring our family together through the power of play," said Doug.

A week later, their living room table was gone and a Killerspin Revolution table had become the centerpiece. It turned out to do much more than bring their family together; it was a hit in the neighborhood, with kids and adults alike stopping by to hang out and tip-toe around their mantle to strike a volley. With Killerspin’s help, they've even thrown block parties with 100-plus neighbors picking up paddles.

However, it's always been about more than table tennis for Charlie. Blackwell, of Killerspin, took Charlie under his wing, offering him a summer internship at Killerspin each of the past three summers – when Charlie has been 13, 14 and now 15 years old. On one particular morning, he even sat down with his leadership team and told them he was naming Charlie the CEO for the day.

"Charlie is a classy and very intelligent young man who we couldn't be prouder of," said Blackwell. "We feel honored that Charlie is so connected to us. It's unusual that a teenager has such great vision, energy and understanding. We look forward to him being a part of the Killerspin family for years to come."

Now, let's fast forward back to this summer at the Vatican… Earlier this year, Blackwell landed a meeting with Pope Francis to pitch an idea for the World UnPlugNPlay Festival, an event that would bring people from all around the world together to build human connections through the power of play. Blackwell was inspired by comments the Pope had recently made about how the increasing digitization of the world can have a negative impact on human relationships. The pitch hit, and the planning began.

Blackwell, who also serves on U.S. Bank’s local advisory board, reached out to the bank about sponsoring the event, which would include two tickets for executives to attend and two Killerspin tables with equipment. The bank quickly decided to give the tickets to Doug and Charlie and to donate the tables to nonprofits in Chicago and its headquarters market, Minneapolis.

Yes, You Can Have a Ping-Pong Party with the Pope

It comes at a steep price—but some of that money will be donated to charity.

As far as vacations in Italy go, the latest offering from IfOnly is hard to beat—at least in the eclectic-but-cool department.

The San Francisco-based company, which peddles in experiential travel packages, has put together a trip that enables lucky takers to shake hands and snap photos with Pope Francis at the World UnPlugNPlay Festival in Vatican City August 29-31. The festival is a three-day celebration to encourage people to play table tennis with loved ones and unplug from electronic devices for 15 minutes a day.

Yes, you read that right. The trip, formally referred to as a “Pope Francis Experience” and co-sponsored by the table-tennis brand Killerspin, involves a) flying to Italy, b) meeting the Pope, c) playing table tennis with people you love, and d) unplugging from electronic devices.

But there’s more. In addition to playing ping-pong, on top of meeting His Holiness, travelers receive private VIP tours of the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, and Palazzo Colonna; a two-night stay at Forte Village on Sardinia; and a gala dinner and panel with thought leaders discussing the subjects of digitization and humanity. Oh, and because Chicago-based Killerspin is involved, participants also receive a bunch of swag, including high-end, ultra-rare table tennis paddles. They also get front-row seats for the UnPlugNPlay Table Tennis Championship that same weekend.

Based on this description alone, it’s safe to say the trip is over the top. Factor in the $25,000 per person price tag, and we won’t even fault you for rolling your eyes.

But all IfOnly excursions benefit charities, and this one supports Best Buddies, which provides opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Technically, the trip supports a good cause.

Oddly, the connection among unplugging, ping-pong, and the Pope has existed for a while.

As Killerspin CEO Robert Blackwell, Jr., tells it, the idea behind UnPlugNPlay grew out of a conversation he had with Pope Francis earlier this year about the growing alienation of humanity caused by an increasingly digitized society. One of the by-products of this chat was World UnPlugNPlay Day—August 29, for those of you scoring at home—a day dedicated to scaled-back use of devices of all kinds.

As the table tennis company added more events to the celebration, World UnPlugNPlay Day became an entire festival. The event kicks off in Vatican City, and the Pope will be part of the pomp and circumstance.

The whole idea of a trip has us thinking about how—or even if—one challenges His Holiness to a game of table tennis. Pong, Pontiff? Care for a volley, Vice-regent? The possibilities are almost endless.

The big lie, the thing that bothers me about this is there are 3 separate charities involved, (which need a dig) But the real statement is: Some of the money will go to charity, so my question is what happen to the rest, because by my book Big Bucks are being asked to participate.

The ultimate travel opportunity: Meet the Pope and play ping pong at the Vatican

A world leading table tennis company has teamed up with a luxury travel firm to offer a $25,000 trip to meet the Pope and play some ping pong at the Vatican.

Conde Nast reports that Chicago's table tennis firm Killerspin and the tour company If Only are offering a meet-and-greet with Pope Francis at the first ever World UnPlugNPlay Day.

The event has been dreamed up by Robert Blackwell, head of Killerspin, to try and get people away from virtual reality on mobile and computer screens and into play in the real world.

Events around the world will include a six-day pingpong showcase at the Vatican, in partnership with the Italian Table Tennis Federation.

Beginning at the end of August, there will be top champion-standard matches and a workshop discussion on the digitisation of society. The whole event is a fundraiser for Best Buddies, a charity that helps create jobs for people with disabilities.

The meet-and-greet will take place before the Pope makes a public speech at the tournament.

Blackwell, who has already given the Pope his own table tennis table for the Vatican, told Chicago Business: "People want a natural experience and are concerned about how much time kids are spending with technological devices. This day is really to connect with people you love, your family, friends, customers, employees and the people that need your love."

The travel package includes private tours of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel.

Blackwell told 2luxury2 that the idea for UnPlugNPlay idea came out of a discussion he had with the Pope about the effects of technology on society, and his fears of a growing alienation.

Blackwell said: "The Pope and I spoke about how technology is changing the way we communicate, to the detriment of our relationships with others and our health. For at least this one day, we hope people will put away their devices in order to have fun, and connect with those they love."

The Vatican, Killerspin and If Only have all been contacted for comment.

Robert Blackwell, Breaking news, EKI Consulting, Obama, Killerspin, state grants, Blackwell response

Posted on April 28, 2008 | 1 Comment

The Los Angeles Times, in an article dated April 27, 2008 reveals

that Obama received a $8,000 a month retainer from Robert Blackwell

for his technology firm, Electronic Knowledge Interchange. The total fees paid to Obama amounted to $112,000.

Robert Blackwell has submitted a response on this blog. In fairness and in search for the truth, I am posting his response as he submitted it. I will leave it for the reader to judge for themselves. I have confirmed that this is Robert Blackwell of EKI Consulting.

“This story about Barack is really silly.

The story fails to mention that It was a Republican Governor that gave the original grant. Barack had absolutely nothing to do with getting the grant. He was a junior State Senator with very little clout.

I hired Barack because I knew him and he was a very talented young lawyer.

Too bad that this story is such a distortion of the real truth.”
