Definitely still happening. There was a case I heard about through a Peruvian friend who was doing social work with the native Incans near Lake Titicaca. The government was building a bridge to better connect a remote community a larger city. The community wanted to sacrifice an old lady and bury her in the base of the bridge on their side as a sacrifice. They's already picked her out and were holding here in the local prison. They had to stop the project. Soon enough, they declared that the lady had been released, but she never appeared again the the base was filled in...so the government just went ahead with the project.

In counties like these, there are lots of backwards things that are going on in remote, basically ungoverned territories. There are a number of movies of this type of thing. Madeinusa is an interesting one about a girl who was named after some words on a shirt tag. They thought it meant something special...If I'm not mistaken, that director went on to film an Oscar contender for best foreign film. Well, I know one person who knows where a body is buried...and the Peruvian government knows too.
