Human trials on cutting edge needle-free ‘painless’ COVID -19 vaccine designed, manufactured in South Australia to start
Human trials on a new needle-free ‘painless’ COVID-19 vaccine developed and manufactured in Australia will start this week.
A new needle-free COVID-19 vaccine booster designed and manufactured in South Australia will begin human trials this week.
The DNA-based vaccine designed by University of Adelaide researchers is one of the few in the world to target the Omicron variant – with Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Novavax all targeting the original strain of the virus.
Its makers say the cutting-edge technology could be easily adapted to combat future strains.
Manufactured at a high-tech facility in Adelaide, the new vaccine has the potential to become a major Australian export and would prevent us from having to rely on limited supplies of imported vaccines.
The painless vaccine will be administered using a device from American company Pharmajet which delivers a micro-jet spray of liquid under the skin.
It can be shipped at room temperature, stored for five years and manufactured in existing facilities en-masse.
