When I lived in the UK back in the early 90's there were still plenty of old timers around that lived and fought through WWII. one of my neighbors remembered an "Allied Base" near his home in eastern England that was fake. Inflatable aircraft is mostly what he remembered but there were other vehicles as well.
It as absolutely amazing how much respect the older men and women had for "us Yanks". I was only in my late 20's and was personally thanked numerous times for everything "we Yanks" did for them in the war. I had to remind them I wasn't even alive then. Most had a deep gratitude and reverence for Americans that was plainly evident.
