Julian Assange's Health Is Deteriorating, His Wife Warns

The WikiLeaks founder has been confined in the U.K. for more than ten years without being convicted and has been in the Belmarsh high-security prison in east London since 2019.

In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) Radio National on Monday, Stella Assange stated that journalist Julian Assange's health is rapidly deteriorating while he remains a prisoner in London's Belmarsh prison.

“It’s a nasty environment and it would deteriorate anyone’s health but he was already in a bad health situation when he entered the prison, ”she said and recalled that the WikiLeaks founder suffered a minor stroke in October 2021.

"So his health was in decline and we’re extremely worried that he will at any moment have a catastrophic health episode inside Belmarsh prison without the ability to get emergency treatment – because that’s the nature of prisons, basically,” she added.

On June 17, U.K. Home Secretary Priti Patel signed an order to extradite Assagne to the United States, where he is charged with 18 crimes related to espionage and computer intrusion.

Through these accusations, Washington intends to punish him for having revealed the human rights abuses and war crimes committed by the U.S. in Guantanamo, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

From the date of the extradition authorization, Assange's attorneys have 14 days to appeal Patel's decision. If the Australian journalist is taken to the U.S., he could face up to 175 years in prison.

An unjust pursuit: On U.S.’ relentless pursuit of Julian Assange

June 21, 2022 00:20 IST

The United States’s relentless pursuit of Julian Assange received a fillip after the British Home Secretary, Priti Patel, gave the go-ahead to extradite him to the U.S. Wanted for criminal charges, which include violation of the country’s Espionage Act of 1917, Mr. Assange could face punishment ranging up to 175 years in prison if convicted in the U.S. The charges were framed under the Donald Trump administration after accusing him of collaborating with U.S. soldier Chelsea Manning who published classified documents and communications on wikileaks.org, the website run by Mr. Assange. Mr. Assange is the first journalist to have been charged under the First World War era Act. Ironically, during the tenure of Mr. Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama (U.S. President Joe Biden was the Vice-President then) the Justice Department had concluded that it would not pursue criminal charges against Mr. Assange and WikiLeaks as it would pose grave threats to the country’s press freedom laws, particularly the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution that guarantees freedom of expression. The cables and documents published by WikiLeaks reveal the severe abuse of international and humanitarian law, war excesses and crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan by the U.S. government among others, besides shining a light on the inner workings of the elite in democracies and autocracies across the world. The diplomatic cables in particular, initially released after careful redaction by media organisations, and other documents went on to form the bulwark of a large repertoire of investigative journalism. In a rational world, the perpetrators of the excesses revealed by WikiLeaks would have been pursued for justice while Mr. Assange would have been released from his harsh and extended stay in a British prison.

Yet, the dogged pursuit of Mr. Assange has been renewed by the Biden administration. The only guarantee that it has provided is that it will not hold him in a maximum security prison, which has strict confinement rules, and that if convicted, he could serve his sentence in his native Australia if he requested it. Its position runs counter to its stated aim of bringing the U.S. back to the forefront of world democracies that promote values enshrined in the West as pivotal, such as freedom of expression accorded to the press. Subjecting Mr. Assange to trial will be a blow against media freedom in the U.S. and will also criminalise investigative journalism, particularly one that is pointed at the inner workings of the deep state. Mr. Assange’s representatives have filed an appeal before the British High Court. With the present Labor party-led Australian government — Mr. Assange remains an Australian citizen — also expressing its displeasure at the continued pursuit, the onus is on the British judiciary to do right by him.

Julian Assange case reflects US, UK hypocrisy on press freedom: China

The case of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange reflects the 'hypocrisy' of the US and the UK over press freedom, China says

“People are treated either as heroes if they expose other countries or as criminals if they expose the US,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin says.

Coming down heavily on the Western countries over press freedom, China has said the case of incarcerated WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange reflected the "hypocrisy" of the US and the UK.“The case of Julian Assange is a mirror. It reflects the hypocrisy of the US and the UK on press freedom,” Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, told a news conference on Monday in Beijing.

“People are free to expose other countries but subject to severe punishment if they expose the US,” said Wang, responding to a question on Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, whose extradition order was signed last Friday by British Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Assange’s extradition order was passed to the secretary by the UK courts last month. His wife, Stella Moris, vowed to fight the decision, saying the British Home Office's decision to extradite Julian Assange to the US is “not the end of the road.” “We're not at the end of the road here," Morris said on Friday. "We're going to use every appeal avenue and we're going to fight." After creating WikiLeaks in 2006, Assange published around 1 million documents obtained from American activist and whistleblower Chelsea Manning. The documents included US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and alleged war crimes during those wars. The publication of a further 250,000 confidential documents relating to US efforts to isolate Iran raised eyebrows in Washington. READ MORE: UK clears Assange extradition to US as WikiLeaks vows to pursue appeal 'People criminalised if they expose US' Assange will face 18 counts of hacking the US government computers and violating the espionage law and a potential prison sentence for years if he is extradited to the US. Assange has 14 days to appeal since the extradition order was signed. Launching a broadside on the western standards on press freedom, Wang said: “People are treated either as heroes if they expose other countries or as criminals if they expose the US.” "In other countries, holding the media accountable amounts to ‘political persecution’ while in the US, clamping down on media is to 'act in accordance with the law'," said Wang. “All eyes are on the Assange case. Hope and believe that fairness and justice will prevail, and that hegemony and abuse of might will not last forever,” he added. Assange was dragged out of Ecuador’s Embassy building in London last year, where he took refuge for more than seven years. The British police said he was arrested for skipping his bail in 2012 and on behalf of the US due to an extradition warrant. Later, he was found guilty of breaking his bail terms in 2012 after failing to surrender to security services by the Westminster Magistrates’ Court and given a 50-week prison term. READ MORE:

'Joe Biden could just drop these charges and move on': Julian Assange's brother fears for his future

Published monday 20 June 2022

Julian Assange's brother has told GB News US President Joe Biden “could just drop these charges” against the WikiLeaks co-founder and “move on.”

Mr Assange is wanted by the US on 18 counts, including a spying accusation, after his organisation published confidential military records and diplomatic cables.

If convicted of breaching the Espionage Act, Assange faces up to 175 years in jail.

But the brother of Mr Assange, Gabriel Shipton, believes the case has “gone on too long” and “could be ended so easily.”

He added in an interview on GB News’ Mark Steyn: “Joe Biden could just drop these charges, move on, just let it go and Julian could walk free.”

It comes after Home Secretary Priti Patel made her decision on Friday to extradite Mr Assange, which WikiLeaks said was the “very last day” it could be announced.

A Home Office spokesman said: “Under the Extradition Act 2003, the Secretary of State must sign an extradition order if there are no grounds to prohibit the order being made. Extradition requests are only sent to the Home Secretary once a judge decides it can proceed after considering various aspects of the case.

“On 17 June, following consideration by both the Magistrates’ Court and High Court, the extradition of Mr Julian Assange to the US was ordered. Mr Assange retains the normal 14-day right to appeal.

“In this case, the UK courts have not found that it would be oppressive, unjust or an abuse of process to extradite Mr Assange.

"Nor have they found that extradition would be incompatible with his human rights, including his right to a fair trial and to freedom of expression, and that whilst in the US he will be treated appropriately, including in relation to his health.”

When asked about the UK’s involvement in the case, Mr Shipton said: “I think from where I sit, it looks like the UK Is complicit in this sort of punishment of Julian, this punishment by process.

“We have to remember Julian has been detained in the UK one way or another for the last 12 years.

“This has been the crown prosecutors, the UK judiciary, Her Majesty’s prison system, these are the people who have been dolling out this punishment to Julian so the UK is complicit in this.”

Australian PM Refuses to Publicly Intervene in Julian Assange’s Extradition to the US

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said he will not take a more forthright public position in the case of WikiLeaks founder and Australian citizen Julian Assange.

The move comes amid mounting calls for the Australian government to intervene in the extradition of Assange to the United States where he is convicted of 18 charges, including hacking and espionage.

When asked whether he had spoken with U.S. president Joe Biden about the issue, the newly elected Australian PM said that he wanted to lead a government that “engages diplomatically and appropriately with our partners.”

“I have made clear on what my position is publicly. I made it clear last year,” Albanese said on Monday. “I stand by my comments that I made back then.”

“I make this point as well, there are some people who think that if you put things in capital letters on Twitter and put an exclamation mark that somehow makes it more important. It doesn’t.”

On Dec. 15, 2021, Albanese told ABC Radio Northern Tasmania that he did not see “what purpose is served” by the ongoing pursuit of Assange.

“The fact is that you have the circumstances whereby the person who has actually leaked the classified information to WikiLeaks is free, is walking around, isn’t incarcerated,” he said at that time, referring to former army soldier Chelsea Manning who was sentenced to 35 years in prison but was released in 2017 after former U.S. president Barack Obama commuted the rest of her sentence.

“But the person who published that information remains in jail in Britain awaiting the extradition procedures that the United States is taking place.”

On Friday the UK Home Secretary Priti Patel approved the Assange’s extradition, with the Home Office saying it had “not found that it would be oppressive, unjust or an abuse of process to extradite Mr Assange.” Assange faces up to 170 years in prison.

“Nor have they found that extradition would be incompatible with his human rights, including his right to a fair trial and to freedom of expression, and that whilst in the US he will be treated appropriately, including in relation to his health,” a Home Office spokesperson said.

Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said in a joint statement with Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus that Australia will continue to offer consular assistance to Assange but the government is “not a party to Mr Assange’s case, nor can the Australian government intervene in the legal matters of another country”.

Echoing the previous government’s opinion in the case, Wong said Labor would “continue to convey our expectations that Mr Assange is entitled to due process, humane and fair treatment, access to proper medical care, and access to his legal team”.

“The Australian government has been clear in our view that Mr Assange’s case has dragged on for too long and that it should be brought to a close. We will continue to express this view to the governments of the United Kingdom and United States.”
