Two Canadians Found Dead with Throats Slashed in Mexico Resort of Playa Del Carmen
Quintana Roo – Two Canadians were found dead with their throats slashed in Mexico’s Playa del Carmen, state officials said on Tuesday.
The couple was found dead at a hotel condominium and a security guard was injured, Quintana Roo state prosecutors said.
The deceased male was on Interpol’s wanted list for fraud.

Prosecutors in Quintana Roo state, also home to resorts like Cancun and Tulum, said the man and the woman were found dead Monday at a hotel or condominium in the troubled resort, and a third person was reported injured.
There was no immediate information on their names or hometowns. “Global Affairs Canada is aware of the death of two Canadian citizens in Mexico,” the ministry said in a statement.
But prosecutors confirmed the male victim was on an Interpol wanted list for fraud charges.
News of the executed couple comes as violence in Mexico’s resort towns of Tulum and Cancun explode.
Cartel violence has spilled over into the tourist resorts along Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
Last October two travel bloggers visiting Tulum were caught in the crossfire of rival gangs and died.
A fierce shootout just north of Playa del Carmen left at least two drug dealers dead last November, AP reported.

According to Forbes, Ukrainian forces are set to receive an uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV) called "GNOM" that is no bigger than a standard microwave and weighs around 110lbs.
GNOM isn't radio-controlled and has a 2,000 meter (1.25 mile) spool of fiber-optic cable mounted on the rear that offers operators a jam-proof way to control it on the modern battlefield without being detected or signal jammed by Russian electronic warfare equipment.
"Control of GNOM is possible in the most aggressive environment during the operation of the enemy's electronic warfare equipment.
"The operator doesn't deploy a control station with an antenna, and does not unmask his position. The cable is not visible, and it also does not create thermal radiation that could be seen by a thermal imager," said Eduard Trotsenko, CEO and owner of Temerland, the maker of the GNOM.
"While it is usually operated by remote control, GNOM clearly has some onboard intelligence and is capable of autonomous navigation. Previous Temerland designs have included advanced neural network and machine learning hardware and software providing a high degree of autonomy, so the company seems to have experience," Forbes said.
The 7.62mm machinegun mounted on top of the "Terminator-style" robot will provide fire support for Ukrainian forces in dangerous areas. The UGV can also transport ammunition or other supplies to the front lines and even evacuate wounded soldiers with a special trailer.

Texas Mayor, Teacher Arrested for Soliciting Child Online
Matt McIlravy, who was recently elected Mayor of Point Pilot, Texas, was arrested for online solicitation of a child, according to KTVT-TV. The mayor, who is also a teacher, has been charged with a second-degree felony.
The 42-year-old was arrested on June 21 as a result of an undercover operation conducted by the Dallas Police Department. Point Pilot is located north of Dallas.
Law enforcement officials said their ongoing investigation revealed other communications with minors who have not been identified at this time, KTVT-TV reported.
The small-town Texas mayor is a married father of two boys that works as a design engineer and also serves as a men’s prayer meeting leader, the New York Post reported. His city government profile has since been scrubbed.
He was elected mayor of the town of roughly 4,000 this past May. The Point Pilot mayor does not have a listed political affiliation on his campaign Facebook page.

Former Australian of the Year Grace Tame is calling on the federal government to close a legal loophole that allows paedophiles to quarantine their superannuation from sexual abuse survivors.
Under the current rules, victims of crime who launch civil action for compensation against their perpetrators cannot access any funds held in the offender's superannuation accounts.
"Paedophiles are able to hide their assets in their super, which should be available to compensate survivors of abuse," she said.
"What this means is that the liability is on the taxpayer to fund the compensation of survivors.
"What needs to change is that paedophiles should be responsible for compensating their victims."
Victims' advocate Howard Brown said the issue came to light in 2017, when the victims of convicted Bega Valley paedophile Maurice Van Ryn discovered they would be unable to access hundreds of thousands of dollars he had in superannuation through a civil compensation claim.
"We found that [Van Ryn] was virtually [penniless] as he had placed all his funds into his superannuation account," Mr Brown said.
"And [Van Ryn] basically said to us: 'Everything I have is in my superannuation account, and you can't touch that.'
"And of course, he was correct – we couldn't."

Former Olympic swim coach Dick Caine charged over historical sexual abuse allegations
Renowned swimming coach Dick Caine has been charged over the alleged sexual abuse of young teenage athletes he was training.
The 76-year-old was arrested at a home in Condell Park, in Sydney's south-west, about 7am today and taken to Bankstown Police Station, where he was charged with nine offences.
The charges relate to the alleged abuse of two teenage students at a swim school at Carss Park, in Sydney's south, in the 1970s.
The first report was made by a woman last January who said she was targeted while she was a student at a swim school in the mid-1970s.
Strike Force Coco was established by officers from Kings Cross and the investigation uncovered further allegations of another teenage girl being abused at the same swim school.
Acting Superintendent Chris Nicholson from NSW Police said police will allege the girls were aged 16 and 17 at the time of the alleged offences.
He said the alleged assaults took place "in a number of locations in and around the southern Sydney area".
"I want to stress that these allegations are very serious but the investigation is ongoing," Nicholson added.
Caine has been charged with nine offences - six counts of carnal knowledge by a teacher of a girl aged 10-17, and three counts of indecent assault.
He has been refused bail and will face court later today.
Nicholson also spoke about the "courage and bravery" of the alleged victims, and had a message for other survivors.
"I would like to say to all survivors of sexual abuse living in our community that the NSW Police Force wants to listen to your story," he said.
"What today should show is that whether the NSW Police Force receives an allegation of sexual violence that occurred yesterday, or last week, or last year or 50 years ago, that we will investigate all matters that come to our attention with our full potential and we will wrap our full support around victim-survivors as they tell their story."

WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange has been treated “very unfairly” to the shame of the entire world, and Mexico has offered to take him in, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador told reporters on Tuesday. He said he would bring up Assange’s case with his US counterpart Joe Biden when they meet in July.
The UK announced last week it would extradite the jailed journalist to the US, where he faces espionage charges and up to 175 years behind bars if convicted. The decision by UK Home Secretary Priti Patel was “very disappointing,” said Lopez, who also goes by his initials AMLO.
He also said he intends to ask Biden to drop charges against Assange when they meet next month. Such an action would go counter to the “hardliners in the US” but “humanity must prevail,” AMLO added.

“Julian Assange is the best journalist of our time in the world and he has been treated very unfairly, worse than a criminal,” AMLO said. “This is a shame for the world.”
Mexico is willing to provide Assange sanctuary if and when he is released, the president added, reminding reporters that he had called on the previous US administration to drop charges against Assange as “a prisoner of conscience.”
Assange, an Australian citizen, sought asylum in Ecuador in 2012, suspecting that Washington wanted him arrested and extradited over WikiLeaks publishing the documents about US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2010. He spent the next seven years trapped at Ecuador’s embassy in London – as the UK refused him safe passage – until his asylum was revoked by a new US-friendly government in Quito.
British police dragged Assange out of the embassy in April 2019 and put him in the maximum-security Belmarsh prison in south London, where he remains to this day. Within a month of his arrest, the US unsealed an indictment charging him of offenses under the Espionage Act, for which he could face 175 years in prison. Assange has denied all allegations, and a key witness in Washington’s case against him admitted he lied in his testimony.
Canberra has not spoken up for Assange’s release, even though the recently elected Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had opposed the charges against the journalist during the election campaign. Albanese said Monday that he still believed Assange should go free, but that his government would not publicly intervene with the US on his behalf, because it “engages diplomatically and appropriately with our partners.”
