I don't think anyone ever used straw straws for sucking drinks - too small. Mebbe elder twigs though. Just cut one off and run a stiff wire through it - did it to make corn cob pipes when I was a kid.

It's called acclimatization. You live in airconditioning all your life, and you are more susceptible to heat when exposed to it. I grew up decades ago when there was no airconditioning anywhere in town, and it was 95/95 for weeks on end in the summer, and we thought nothing about how hot it was.
