'Island of death from behind': dark past of Sentosa, the Trump-Kim summit venue

Sentosa Island, now a tourist spot that boasts golf courses and a Universal Studios park, used to be home to a prisoner of war camp

The venue for next week’s summit in Singapore between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un is home to beautiful beaches, casinos and some of the best golf courses in Asia.

But Sentosa island – where the US president and the North Korean leader will meet on 12 June – has a dark past.

While its contemporary name means “peace and tranquility”, Sentosa was used as a Japanese prisoner of war camp for British and Australian servicemen after allied forces surrendered to the Japanese in 1942.

What will be the outcome of Trump and Kim Jong-un's nuclear summit?

It was also the site of summary executions of large numbers of Singaporean Chinese – including civilians – suspected of being involved in anti-Japanese activities. Many of the killings were carried out on the island’s beach, now home to the 18-hole Serapong golf course.

Facebook gave access to personal data about its users to Huawei, a Chinese electronics firm flagged by US intelligence as a 'national security threat'

Huawei was allowed access to users' relationship status, friends, likes, and more

The Pentagon has banned the sale of Huawei smartphones on US military bases

FBI Director said Huawei phones could be used for 'undetected espionage'

Huawei was among the 60 companies that Facebook allowed to have 'deep access to personal data about users and their friends'

Facebook shared user data with four Chinese phone manufacturers, including Huawei, which US intelligence experts have branded a 'national security threat'.

The social network acknowledged the handset makers — Huawei, Lenovo, Oppo and TCL — were among the 60 companies it had shared data with as early as 2007.

Huawei was singled-out by the FBI director earlier this year, who said he was 'deeply concerned' its handsets have the 'capacity to conduct undetected espionage' on behalf of the Chinese government.

Facebook allowed Huawei and other manufacturers access to user data to enable social media features, like Facebook Messenger, on their devices.

These Facebook 'experiences' were used as a stop-gap until the social network could build a designated mobile app for the manufacturers' operating system.

Facebook will now wind down its dealings with Huawei, the Californian company confirmed in a statement to The New York Times.

WHY ARE HUAWEI AND ZTE CONSIDERED A ‘NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT’?

The heads of the FBI, CIA, NSA, and the director of US National Intelligence, have warned against the use of Huawei and ZTE smartphones.

Elsewhere, the Pentagon ordered all retail outlets on US military bases to stop selling Huawei and ZTE branded smartphones.

FBI director Chris Wray said the government was ‘deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don’t share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks.’

These concerns stem from the fact that both Huawei and ZTE have demonstrable links to the Chinese government.
