The demonstrations against right-wing President Guillermo Lasso which also draw attention to an increase in unemployment, farm product prices and crime have taken place since June 13, and they flared up again Thursday.

The New York Times reported that Quito, the country's second most populous city has been brought to a halt by the protests. Participants blocked roads and burned piles of tires. Police have fired tear gas at protesters, who threw rocks at officers, the newspaper added.

The Alliance of Organizations for Human Rights said at least three people have died and nearly 100 injured in the clashes. The group called on Lasso to declare a state of emergency.

The Ecuadorian government said it's lost control of the Amazonian city of Puyo, where 18 police officers have been reported missing.

"We cannot guarantee public safety in Puyo right now, they have burned the entire police infrastructure and the entrance to the city is under siege," Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo said Tuesday.

Despite knee pain, Pope Francis’ trip to Canada to meet residential school survivors is on

The Vatican on Thursday released the itinerary for Pope Francis’ July 24-30 visit to Canada. Francis is due to visit Canada to apologize to Indigenous peoples for abuses they suffered at Catholic-run residential schools.

More than 150,000 native children in Canada were forced to attend state-funded Christian schools from the 19th century until the 1970s in an effort to isolate them from their homes and culture. The aim was to Christianize and assimilate them into mainstream society.

Some former students testified before the commission that priests at the schools had fathered infants with Indigenous students, that the babies had been taken away from their young mothers and killed, and that in some cases their bodies were thrown into furnaces. Many students also died from disease, accidents, fires and during attempts to escape, according to the commission.

Nearly 1,000 bodies of indigenous children were found in two mass graves in June 2021.

Hearings are underway in what is being described as the largest scandal in Vatican history, an incredible story that has implications for the Church as a whole and the Vatican’s standing in the world.

The case primarily involves charges against one of the highest-ranking Vatican officials, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, who was considered at one time to be the most influential cardinal in the Vatican and a potential successor to Pope Francis. Becciu is now facing a host of corruption charges concerning his role in the acquisition by the Vatican Secretariat of State of a commercial property in London, from which the Vatican claims it lost hundreds of millions of dollars. The case has upset the traditional power structures at the Vatican and has even engulfed the Vatican’s own Financial Intelligence Unit, as well as the seller and broker of the London property.

Beyond the specific facts of the property deal, the case has turned heads around the world due to the worrying practices of the Vatican around fairness of due process and rule of law.

Strangely, despite the alleged criminality supposedly taking place in the U.K. and the Vatican’s losses being suffered in London, there has to date been no criminal case before the English courts against any of the defendants. Instead, the Vatican initiated an investigation and trial within its territory, allowing prosecutors to rely on arcane and frankly questionable practices.

Credit Suisse Chairman Quits After Breaching Covid-19 Protocols

Credit Suisse Group’s Chairman António Horta-Osório resigned when he breached Covid-19-related rules by his personal use of a corporate aircraft, and he attended the Wimbledon tennis finals in the U.K. in July, when the country’s Covid-19 rules required him to be in quarantine.

Seriously? I think not.
