Senate OKs landmark gun violence bill, House passage is next

The Senate on Thursday easily approved a bipartisan gun violence bill that seemed unthinkable just a month ago, clearing the way for final congressional approval of what will be lawmakers’ most far-reaching response in decades to the nation’s run of brutal mass shootings.

After years of GOP procedural delays that derailed Democratic efforts to curb firearms, Democrats and some Republicans decided that congressional inaction was untenable after last month’s rampages in New York and Texas. It took weeks of closed-door talks but a group of senators from both parties emerged with a compromise embodying incremental but impactful movement to curb bloodshed that has come to regularly shock — yet no longer surprise — the nation.

The $13 billion measure would toughen background checks for the youngest gun buyers, keep firearms from more domestic violence offenders and help states put in place red flag laws that make it easier for authorities to take weapons from people adjudged dangerous. It would also fund local programs for school safety, mental health and violence prevention.

The election-year package fell far short of more robust gun restrictions Democrats have sought for years, including bans on the assault-type weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines used in the slayings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas. Yet the accord let leaders of both parties declare victory and demonstrate to voters that they know how to compromise and make government work, while also leaving room for each side to appeal to its core supporters.

“This is not a cure-all for the all the ways gun violence affects our nation,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., whose party has made gun restrictions a goal for decades. “But it is a long overdue step in the right direction. Passing this gun safety bill is truly significant, and it’s going to save lives.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in a nod to the Second Amendment right to bear arms that drives many conservative voters, said “the American people want their constitutional rights protected and their kids to be safe in school.” He said “they want both of those things at once, and that is just what the bill before the Senate will have accomplished.”

The day proved bittersweet for advocates of curtailing gun violence. Underscoring the enduring potency of conservative cIout, the right-leaning Supreme Court issued a decision expanding the right of Americans to carry arms in public. The justices struck down a New York law that has required people to prove a need for carrying a weapon before they get a license to do so.

The vote on final passage was 65-33.

Raid on Home of Former Trump DOJ Official Jeffrey Clark Was Part of Nationwide FBI Raids on Republicans

Former Trump Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Clark appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight on the Fox News Channel Thursday night to talk about the dawn FBI raid on his Northern Virginia home Wednesday. Clark said the agents made him go outside in his pajamas while they searched his house. Clark said twelve FBI agents, two Fairfax County police officers and an ‘electronic sniffer dog’ searched his house for over three hours. All his electronic devices were seized.

Clark said the raid was part of nationwide “Stasi-like” raids by the FBI on Republicans involved in helping President Trump to stop the steal of the 2020 presidential election.

Local news reports out of Nevada and Pennsylvania as well as the Washington Post, confirm the nationwide action by the feds.

Mediaite reported on the Clark’s appearance (excerpt):

“At what point can we say the Department of Justice, where you once served, is a political instrument, it’s completely out of control?” Carlson asked.

“Yeah, I think this is highly politicized and it’s also part, Tucker if you didn’t know it, of a nationwide effort yesterday,” Clark replied. “There were multiple states where multiple people were roughly simultaneously raided for their electronic devices. And that obviously requires a high level of coordination.”

Clark added, “I just think we’re living in an era that I don’t recognize and increasingly, Tucker, I don’t recognize the country anymore with these Stasi-like things happening.”

Military transport plane crashes in Russia

An Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft crashed near the Russian city of Ryazan

Several crew members have been killed after a transport aircraft crashed on Friday morning near the city of Ryazan in central Russia, some 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow.

Multiple pictures and videos circulating on social media indicated the crashed jet was an Ilyushin Il-76, and the Russian Defense Ministry later confirmed it was a military flight.

“During a training flight, without cargo, an engine malfunction forced the crew to perform an emergency landing on rough ground,” the ministry said, adding that the aircraft “partially” fell apart upon touching the ground.

The military have yet to confirm the number of victims, but initial reports indicated there were nine or 10 people on board. At least two of them died while six survivors were rushed to local hospitals, according to Russian media reports citing emergency services.

There were no reports of injuries or damage to infrastructure on the ground, as the plane apparently went down in a field near a freeway. The blaze was swiftly brought under control as multiple fire crews and ambulances were seen responding to the crash.

Some unconfirmed reports alleged that the plane crashed and caught fire soon after takeoff from Ryazan, where it had made a stopover for refueling en route from the city of Orenburg, near the border with Kazakhstan, to the city of Belgorod situated along the Ukrainian border. The Baza telegram channel reported that one of the jet’s engines was on fire before it attempted an emergency landing.
