NYC prosecutors flee in droves amid soft-on-crime policies, burdensome state reforms

 

Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's office this year has hemorrhaged 65 assistant district attorneys, which is about 12% of the staff.

 

Bragg released a memo on his third day in office, ordering prosecutors not to seek prison sentences for a number of crimes and to downgrade charges – including for robberies and commercial burglaries.

“It was three justices named by one president — Donald Trump — who were the core of today’s decision to upend the scales of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country,” Biden said Friday after the Supreme Court’s conservative majority voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling from 1973 that provided constitutional protections for women seeking abortions.

‘Biblical’ insect swarms spur Oregon push to fight pests

 

Driving down a windy canyon road in northern Oregon rangeland, Jordan Maley and April Aamodt are on the look out for Mormon crickets, giant insects that can ravage crops.

 

“There’s one right there,” Aamodt says.

 

They’re not hard to spot. The insects, which can grow larger than 2 inches (5 centimeters), blot the asphalt.

 

Mormon crickets are not new to Oregon. Native to western North America, their name dates back to the 1800s, when they ruined the fields of Mormon settlers in Utah. But amidst drought and warming temperatures — conditions favored by the insects — outbreaks across the West have worsened.

Kristi Noem celebrates Roe v. Wade's overturning but says women shouldn't 'be prosecuted' for abortions

 

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said Sunday that women shouldn't be prosecuted for seeking abortions following the Supreme Court’s ruling last week overturning Roe v. Wade, which allowed state-level abortion bans in South Dakota and elsewhere to take effect.

 

Noem, a Republican, celebrated the "wonderful news" of the high court's finding that there is no constitutional guarantee to abortion access, but she told "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz, "I don’t believe women should ever be prosecuted. I don’t believe that mothers in this situation [should] ever be prosecuted. Now doctors who knowingly violate the law, they should be prosecuted."
