Today in 1965 the first commercial communications satellite Intelstat I was activated in geosynchronous orbit, bringing “live via satellite” to the world. Nicknamed “Early Bird”, Intelstat I was initially only supposed to operate for four months. It ended up broadcasting for 4 years and 4 months.
