Ran my BBS "behind" a landline voice phone.

Monitored the line for DTMF after the answering machine picked up. If detected a code of 5's then it forced carrier.

Pretty sweet way to save on landline expenses in the day.

Thats the beast.

Had one built into a teletype terminal (basically a printer with keyboard and acoustic modem).

NOT a processor at all, just hit a key- it sent it. And printed what it got over the port.

I hacked like that back then- sadly had to take a box of paper and a long set of wires with alligator clips to bust and tap into a roadside telephone junction box to get a line most nights. Had modified the printer/modem terminal to operate from 12v in the truck.

Spent many nights in dallas breaching unprotected systems…

I would be rich today if I knew what wildcatting projections were…

Still kick myself for that…
