I learned from a travel writer's books (was a he/ she, early, in the 60's when they were rare) (James Morris became Jan Morris.)
In their book on Venice she mentions the oldest emblem of Venice.. I tried to find it described in more contemporary time, (Book was written in the late 50's before he became "Jan"?)
Said it was something not everyone knew about. Morris liked to go into detail about things most people might not know about.
The old emblem, still at the time affixed to a building there, is a MOLOCK -like Owl thing.

dunno, seems made-up after the fact; because "Lion" is the totem of St. Mark, and St. Mark is the patron saint of Venice.
Don't you think the "com" by Musk was a pretty obvious references to the "Black Venetians"?
The true history between the Black Nobility Venetians and the Pope of "Rome" would be interesting to unwind?
