Vatican Sells London Building at Heart of Corruption Trial to Bain Capital

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican said on Friday it had sold the luxury London building at the centre of an ongoing corruption trial to Bain Capital in recent days for 186 million pounds ($223.6 million).

The real estate venture at its centre began in 2014, when the Vatican's Secretariat of State invested 350 million euros ($390 million)in the building, using brokers it later accused of extortion and other financial crimes.

Reports have emerged detailing the movement of Vatican money through slush funds across Europe — and a Vatican investment of more than $250 million into luxury London apartments, brokered through a ­financier who profited even while the Vatican’s investment tanked.

Italian media also report that Vatican officials contemplated ­investing hundreds of millions in Angolan oil fields — money that comes mostly from an annual collection intended to support papal charities. Per the Italian reports, prosecutors have also found evidence of embezzlement, fraud, abuse of office and money-laundering among the Vatican’s upper echelon of managers.

A first round of indictments in a Vatican City state court is expected to be handed down soon. Red-hatted princes of the church may eventually be implicated.

All of this, of course, sounds like a plot recycled from

“The Godfather Part III.”

Financial scandal at the Vatican is nothing new. The Vatican’s official bank has faced repeated crises since it was founded in 1942, and the bank itself was created to curtail fiscal irregularity.

The figure who made the most progress on reining in Vatican graft — George Cardinal Pell — now sits in an Australian prison, after he was convicted of sexual abuse in a trial many Australian ­jurists found deeply suspect.

The Vatican on Thursday announced the theme for the Church’s upcoming “Jubilee Year 2025.”

A jubilee is a special year of remission of sins and universal pardon. In Leviticus, a jubilee year (Hebrew: יובל yūḇāl) is mentioned to occur every 50th year; during which slaves and prisoners would be freed, debts would be forgiven and the mercies of God would be particularly manifest.

In Western Christianity, the tradition dates to 1300, when Pope Boniface VIII convoked a holy year, following which ordinary jubilees have generally been celebrated every 25 or 50 years, with extraordinary jubilees in addition depending on need.

Vatican suffers £100mn-plus loss on Knightsbridge office sale

London estate agents puzzled by decline in value for prime property on Sloane Avenue

During the Vatican’s eight-year ownership of the building, the value of high-end London offices has risen fast, and the lossmaking sale has raised eyebrows among the capital’s top estate agents.

“It’s surprising . . . It’s not as if capital values have gone down in prime central London in that time, quite the opposite. Maybe [the Vatican] overpaid to assemble the deal and undersold to exit from it,” said one.

The loss “makes no sense”, said another.

The Vatican has made a loss of more than £100mn on the sale of a luxurious Knightsbridge office at the centre of a criminal investigation that has embroiled the Holy See.

The Vatican announced on Friday that it had completed the sale of 60 Sloane Avenue in west London to private equity group Bain Capital for £186mn.

In spite of the halo being a symbol for sun worship… I took the painting of the sleeping child (with the halo symbolizing innocence maybe) on the man's back who is carrying him is supposed to represent his sons featured in the picture. It seems as though Musk is telling someone his children are innocent/unaware of what he's been involved in and he's asking for them to be spared. I notice "Grimes" didn't show up at the Vatican.
