EXCLUSIVE: Facebook, Amazon, Google And Twitter All Work With Left-Wing SPLC

The Southern Poverty Law Center helps Facebook, Amazon, Google and Twitter determine what organizations are “hate groups”

Amazon gave the SPLC the most direct authority while pretending to remain unbiased

The SPLC has been plagued by inaccuracies

Four of the world’s biggest tech platforms have working partnerships with a left-wing nonprofit that has a track record of inaccuracies and routinely labels conservative organizations as “hate groups.”

Facebook, Amazon, Google and Twitter all work with or consult the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in policing their platforms for “hate speech” or “hate groups,” a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation found.

The SPLC is on a list of “external experts and organizations” that Facebook works with “to inform our hate speech policies,” Facebook spokeswoman Ruchika Budhraja told TheDCNF in an interview.

Facebook consults the outside organizations when developing changes to hate speech policies, Budhraja said, noting that Facebook representatives will typically hold between one and three meetings with the groups.

Citing privacy concerns, the Facebook spokeswoman declined to name all the outside groups working with Facebook, but confirmed the SPLC’s participation.

Budhraja emphasized that Facebook’s definition of “hate group” is distinct from the SPLC’s definition and said that Facebook consults with groups across the political spectrum.

The SPLC accused Facebook in a May 8 article of not doing enough to censor “anti-Muslim hate” on the platform. That article did not disclose the SPLC’s working partnership with Facebook.

“We have our own process and our processes are different and I think that’s why we get the criticism [from the SPLC], because organizations that are hate organizations by their standards don’t match ours,” Budhraja said.

“That doesn’t mean that we don’t have a process in place, and that definitely doesn’t mean we want the platform to be a place for hate but we aren’t going to map to the SPLC’s list or process,” she said.

Of the four companies, Amazon gives the SPLC the most direct authority over its platform, TheDCNF found.

Sarah Sanders Wipes The Floor With CNN’s Chris Cuomo

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders knocked CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Thursday and accused his network of reporting opinion rather than the news.

Sanders touted the strong economy and President Trump’s recent legislation benefiting veterans during an interview with Cuomo, and Cuomo wondered if the president’s contention with the media is sustainable.

“Do you think that by saying, ‘We stink,’ that we don’t like veterans, that we are bad for America, the president says we are enemies of America, do you think that works for you long-term?” Cuomo asked.

“What I think is important to remember is that you guys get to ask the questions, but you can’t always complain about the answers,” Sanders shot back. “You constantly ask the same question over and over and over again and expect different answers and then get mad when the answers don’t change.”

Sanders continued to criticize CNN and alleged that they have avoided reporting the news in order to constantly attack the president

“Unfortunately, you guys quit reporting the news. When I can read a news story and I have no idea what side of the story the reporter is on, that’s a good news story,” she said. “You’ll be hard-pressed to find a lot of news that looks like that.”

Cuomo bristled at Sanders’ suggestion that he is an opinion journalist and claimed that she doesn’t answer the public’s questions during White House press briefings.

“I answer questions all day, every day,” Sanders retorted. “It’s what I spend every minute of the day doing. It’s why I’m sitting here at 9 o’clock at night answering questions to you.”

Trump urges DOJ to reject ex-DNC IT staffer's plea deal

Our Justice Department must not let Awan & Debbie Wasserman Schultz off the hook'

President Donald Trump on Twitter Thursday urged the Department of Justice not to accept a plea agreement from a former IT aide to congressional Democrats who is being prosecuted in a scheme to fraudulently obtain home equity loans.

Imran Awan, who worked for Democratic lawmakers, including Democratic National Committee chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, is said to be in talks to strike a plea in agreement in the case.

Mr. Awan and his wife, Hina Alvi, are accused of obtaining home equity lines of credit form the Congressional Federal Union by giving false information about two properties and sending the money to individuals in Pakistan — their nation of origin. Both face federal bank fraud and conspiracy charges. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

But Mr. Trump alleged that Mr. Awan is trying to make a plea deal to protect Ms. Wasserman Schultz and keep federal investigators from accessing the hacked computer server that handled email from the DNC. Conservatives have claimed the server has evidence that the DNC and the Obama administration’s Justice Department tried to limit the scope of the FBI’s investigation into Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s secret email account.

“Our Justice Department must not let Awan & Debbie Wasserman Schultz off the hook,” the president tweeted. “The Democrat I.T. scandal is a key to much of the corruption we say today. They want to make a ‘plea deal’ to hide what is on their Server. Where is the Sever? Really bad!”

A plea agreement hearing for Mr. Awan and Ms. Alvi is scheduled for July 3 before a federal judge in Washington, D.C. A court filing earlier this week did not reveal any details about the possible agreement, but did say “the parties are currently exploring a resolution of this matter.”

Mr. Trump has tweeted about the case in the past. In April, Mr. Trump referred to Mr. Awan as “the Pakistani mystery man” and accused him and Ms. Wasserman Schultz of having the missing Clinton emails. He also mentioned Mr. Awan in an interview in The New York Times saying, “whatever happened to this Pakistani guy who worked with the DNC?”

Federal investigators first looked into Mr. Awan in early 2017 after allegations surfaced that he had stolen computer equipment and accessed sensitive systems. He was fired by most Democrat lawmakers in February, but Ms. Wasserman Schultz kept him on the payroll until he was arrested in July 2017.

Ms. Wasserman Schultz has blamed Republicans for the attention on Mr. Awan, claiming it is an effort to distract from the Russian collusion allegations lodged against the Trump campaign. She blamed “the right-wing media circus fringe” for the scrutiny on Mr. Awan in an August interview with the Sun-Sentinel.

30 percent of federal prisoners are immigrants, DOJ/DHS reports

Immigrants accounted for more than 30 percent of the federal prison population and nearly all of them are confirmed or suspected illegal immigrants, the government said in a new report Tuesday.

The government said it had 57,820 migrants in its prisons as of Dec. 31, Homeland Security and the Justice Department said in the joint report.

Nearly 20,000 other immigrants were held in pretrial detention by the U.S. Marshals Service, most of them in contracted facilities, costing the government $134 million for just three months. That works out to nearly $90 a day for each person in those contract facilities.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said there shouldn’t be any illegal immigrants in prisons, because they shouldn’t have been in the country in the first place.

“Every crime committed by an illegal alien is, by definition, a crime that should have been prevented,” he said in releasing the report. “It is outrageous that tens of thousands of Americans are dying every year because of the drugs and violence brought over our borders illegally and that taxpayers have been forced, year after year, to pay millions of dollars to incarcerate tens of thousands of illegal aliens.”

President Trump last year ordered the Justice and Homeland Security departments to produce a regular count of immigrants in prisons to give taxpayers a sense for one of the costs the government bears.

The total federal prison population is about 185,000, so immigrants account for 31 percent. The vast majority are people who have been ordered deported, making them illegal immigrants once their sentences are completed. About 8 percent are illegal immigrants the government has asked a judge to order deported, and another 5 percent are legal immigrants who the government is also trying to deport in light of their crimes.

A very small number — 169 — have been granted a specific protection and cannot be deported.

The numbers are from last year, or before the new zero tolerance policy the administration has adopted at the border. Under that policy nearly every person who crosses the border illegally is being charged with a crime for illegal entry, a misdemeanor. If they’ve been deported before and try to sneak back they’re charged with with illegal re-entry, a felony.

Outside of the prisons, the U.S. Marshals Service also held 19,688 confirmed immigrants as of Dec. 31, and another 3,022 whose status was still being investigated.

Those numbers could shoot up in future reports thanks to the zero tolerance policy, which is adding hundreds of immigrants a week to the court dockets in California, Arizona and Texas.

The report said 29 percent of the immigrants in federal prisons are serving immigration-related charges such as sneaking back in after being deported, or smuggling other illegal immigrants.

Nearly half of the migrants in federal custody were there for drug smuggling or dealing.

Sex offenders accounted for 2 percent. Fraudsters were 4 percent, and another 4 percent were in for weapons offenses.

The report singled out some of those in federal custody, such as Anibel Rondolpho Rodriguez, an MS-13 gang member who is serving a 45-year sentence after pleading guilty to being part of two murders and two other attempted murders as part of gang warfare.

Two others singled out for mention were a man who had been in the U.S. legally and his partner in crime, an illegal immigrant, who were manufacturing homemade grenades. Some were sold in the U.S. while others were being shipped to Mexico. At the time of his arrest the lead bomb-maker was working to build a batch of 200 grenades, the government said.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce demands amnesty for 1 million migrants

The country’s largest business lobby pleaded with Congress this week to grant legal status to a million illegal immigrants, saying the job market is so hot that the country couldn’t stomach losing them if they are asked to leave.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce also rejected proposals to cut future immigration levels, saying they “would be devastating to our economy.”

Neil L. Bradley, a longtime GOP staffer on Capitol Hill who is now executive vice president at the chamber, sent a letter to lawmakers who have kick-started a new debate in the House on broad immigration reforms.

GOP leaders are trying to craft a bill that can get majority support by granting permanent legal status to illegal immigrant “Dreamers,” combined with major changes to stiffen enforcement, allow for faster deportations and cut future immigration levels.

Mr. Bradley said businesses welcome legalizing Dreamers, and will accept “much needed improvements to our nation’s border security” — though he didn’t say how far businesses would go on that score.

He did, however, demand an additional amnesty be added in for more than 300,000 people who’ve lived in the U.S. on temporary humanitarian reprieves for years, and who he says are now embedded in the economy.

And he rejected plans to reduce future levels of legal immigration, at a time when there are more job openings than people actively seeking jobs.

While some analysts have said that situation could help workers by forcing businesses to compete for them, raising wages and benefits, businesses say they fear not being able to meet their needs for workers.

“In an economy where the number of job openings now exceeds the number of unemployed individuals, removing over one million individuals from the labor force will only exacerbate the problems that employers currently face in meeting their workforce needs,” Mr. Bradley wrote to lawmakers.

White House launches anti-opioid public service campaign

The Trump administration on Thursday launched an anti-opioid advertising campaign that depicts shocking true-life stories aimed at deterring young people for drug use.

The ads will target an 18 to 24 year old age group through digital platforms, social media and television, according to the White House.

It is the Trump administration’s first public service advertising campaign. It is also this nation’s first multiple advertising and awareness campaigns targeting young Americans and the opioid crisis.

White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway said the campaign would “raise awareness, incite action and literally save lives.”

“Our goal is to show the dangers of misusing opioids and how quickly one can become addicted to opioids — as short as five days,” she said.

She said that the campaign, while targeting youths, would also encompass an audience of 15 to 34 year olds.

The first set of four advertisements for the “Stop Youth Opioid Abuse” campaign bring to life the stories of four young Americans who, in pursuit of more opioids, go to extreme lengths to feed their addiction.

In one story, a young woman unfastens her seat belt and purposeful crashes her car at high speed into a garbage dumpster, self-inflict injuries to get a opioid prescription.

President Trump has made combating opioid addiction epidemic a priority since taking office. In October, he directed the Department of Health and Human Services to declare the opioid crisis a nationwide Public Health Emergency, and this year launched an initiative to reduce drug supply and demand in the U.S.

A billionaire who donates his government salary, Mr. Trump handed a $100,000 check to HHS in November to help the agency develop the campaign.

He’s also cast the issue in personal terms, saying his brother, Fred, died of alcoholism in his 40s. Mr. Trump said that’s why he never drinks.

Drug overdoses and other drug-related deaths claim the lives of about 174 Americas every day, with 115 of those deaths attributable to opioid overdoses.

Legions of users got hooked on prescription opioids and turned to cheaper heroin, which is often laced with potent fentanyl from clandestine labs overseas. Many heroin users don’t know the deadly synthetic is in their supply.

The opioid addiction epidemic is largely responsible for lowering life expectancy rates in the U.S. for the past two years. It exceeds the annual death toll from things like car crashes and breast cancer, and estimates suggest it is claiming more Americans that HIV/AIDs did at the height of that epidemic.

“This is why this White House calls this ‘the crisis next door,’” Ms. Conway said.

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) developed the campaign with the Ad Council and the Truth Initiative.

The website opioids.thetruth.com included information about opioids, the epidemic and drug treatment.

The White House cited data that suggests young people are especially susceptible to opioid misuse:

• More than two-thirds of people in drug treatment for opioids reported their first use of opioids (other than heroin) by age 25.

• In 2016, three-quarters of drug-related overdoses among those aged 15 to 24 were opioid-related.

• Teens in 2016 (aged 15-19) were more than twice as likely to die due to a drug overdose as they were 17 years earlier.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did pilot a separate batch of opioids ads last year in select markets, known as the Rx Awareness Campaign, though the White House said those were geared toward the medical community and patients of all ages.

“This goes right to the public,” Ms. Conway said.

The administration said its media partners, including NBC Universal and Vice, will air the ads in a way that “gets to those who need it most.”
